Chinese Traditions

On the day of the wedding, customarily the groom arrives at the door (of his bride) to barter with the maid of honor and bridesmaids (with money inside of lese) to allow him to have the bride’s hand in marriage. The groom might also be asked to perform such tasks as singing and dancing to prove his desire and devotion to his future bride. A tea ceremony is traditionally performed which begins with the bride and groom serving the groom’s family tea (starting with parents, siblings, grandparents, then uncle and aunties) followed by the bride's family. The bride and groom then light incense together and serve each other mochi and other sweet desserts. The bride and groom traditionally take gifts to the groom’s parents’ house on their way to the ceremony. As the Chinese believe fireworks and a lion dance can ward off evil spirits and bring good luck, these traditions are often practiced. During receptions, a seven to nine course Chinese dinner is usually provided.
