Peace Corps Here I come....HOPEFULLY
Intro: The next phase of my life should be veryyyy interesting. Sometime at the end of May 2003 I decided it would be a good idea to join the Peace Corps. Its something I have contimplated since Senior year of college...and I'm now going to fulfill that fantasy.
Part I - TimeLine (ongoing)
May 2003 - Downloaded the Peace Corps application from the Internet June 2003 - Submitted Application to New York Regional Office August 14, 2003 - After many harassing phone calls to my "recruiter" I finally arrive for my interview August 1X, 2003 - Recriter "Tim" emails me and strongly encourages me to accept a nomiation for Urban Youth Development in Eastern Europe August 1X, 2003 - I email recruiter "Tim" back and excitedly accepts the offer (I was just so glad to be nominated for SOMETHING) September 7, 2003 - I call DC to find out when my medical packet is going to arrive, I prematurely made my doctor's appointments and now don't have the papers to fill out. "Matt" in DC gratiously FedEx's me the medical packet. September 9, 2003 - My physical and dental appointments. Realized I needed a GYNO appojntment. September 10, 2003 - Realize I need to get an appointment I went to some 35 years ago! I call the doctor and he offers an appointment for October 2nd! September 19, 2003 - GYNO appointment October 2, 2003 - Appointment with the head shrink. After walking out of the doctors office...I have to admit I did think..."SHIT! Am I crazy???" October 7, 2003 - Drop the entire medical packet with X-rays and all into the Bergenfield post office FedEx box heading for DC October 8, 2003 - DC received the packet October 9, 2003 - Received Legal clearance October 10, 2003 - Receive a FedEx from DC requesting x-rays that I forgot to include October 11, 2003 - Dental appointment for x-rays October 11, 2003 - Drop packet into the Bergenfield post office FedEx box heading for DC October 17, 2003 - Receive Dental Clearance October 31, 2003 - Call DC screening nurse to check status of medical application. Told to check website. November 14, 2003 - Call DC Screening Nurses assistance to check status of my medical application again. Was told by the secretary that the nurse had not looked at my application yet. I was also told that the DC medical office has until December 21st in order for me to meet the 6-week minimum notice of my anticipated date of depature. I was told that I should hear something anyday...but was also told to call back within two weeks if I didn't hear anything. November 26, 2003 - Called the DC Screening Nurses' assitance to check the status of my medical application. I was told that the nurse still had not started looking at my application. There is a backlog and I just had to be patient. (Less than 24 days until the FINAL date they have to notify me...God help me if I need to submit additional information) November 27, 2003 - Happy Turkey Day AND Happy Birthday Mom December 10, 2003 - (11 days to deadline) Received a packet in the mail to have my eye doctor fill out a 6-month post-op report and to have my physician fill out paperwork for my migraines and a report for my health and fitness, and High Cholestrol. December 11, 2003 - Go to my physican to have a Mirgrane, High Cholestrol and Health and Fitness Report report filled out December 12, 2003 - Faxed reports to DC Medical Screening Nurse with a note saying my 6-Month post-op Eye Exam was going to take place January 12th (6 months post-op) December 14, 2003 - Medical Screening Nurse called to discuss my High Cholestrol. After explainging the familiar causes, she asked me to go back to the doctor for a liver function test and a consultation for a possible Cholestrol Elevating Medication regime. December 15, 2003 (6 days to deadline...including weekend-days!!!) - Go back to doctor to discuss Medication. Consultation resulted in an Activity and Health Modification Plan rather than medication. I guess I have to start working out and eating right...DARN!) December 19, 2003 - Received an email saying that I was to receive a PROVISIONAL clearance in order to work on my possible urin infection. December 21, 2003 - DEADLINE FOR CLEARANCE. Medical Screening Nurse said a Provisional was sufficient for an invitiation. However, I called the Placement Officer (got the name and phone number from my recruiter) and was told a Provisional Clearance isn't enough for a placement. What the heck??? Talk about confusing me! December XX, - Went back to the doctor for my 3rd urine sample. December 24, 2003 - Urine Test comes back positive for infection, Urine Culture comes back negative. Doctor suggests a specialist to get a sample "from the source" December 27, 2003 - Called Nurse to see if a Culture was good enough...didn't want anything invasive for this. January X, 2004 - Received Medical Clearance January XX, 2004 - Called Placement Office again. February XX, 2004 - Received a call from a different placement officer and was told that I missed my placement (obviously). Told me about a program going to Jordan in July. Requested something sooner but was told because of the long passport and visa placement, July was the earliest (20 weeks?) February XX, 2004 - Called DC and accepted my Invitation to Jordan Waiting for July 7th when Staging Starts in ...D.C. Training 7/11-9/22 Volunteer 9/22-6/06
