Little is know about Joseph C. Price's early life.
He and some of his children are hard to
identify in the census.
This is due to
so many other Price using the same name and such early time in GA and
MS
history.
There must be a connection to Benjamin Rollins, Lodowick
Rollins, Randolph Price and Stephen Price.

From the work of

Joseph and Celia
Price of GA and MS
What we know about the family of Joseph
and Celia PRICE comes from bounty land Application of Moses PRICE in
1891 and
the research of Thomas F.
RICHARDSON. With the two sources, census
and other records can be use to fill in the details.
Thomas F. RICHARDSON records the oral
traditions of descendants. The bounty land records was made because of
a
misunderstanding. Moses Price and his
sister, Mary HUNT, both of Scotts Co, MS, believed they were entitled
as heirs
of Joseph \Price to bounty land for his service in War of 1812. Joseph had been alive when the 1850 law was
passed authorizing bounty, but he had not claimed it.
However, in order for heirs to be eligible,
they had to be minors at the time of death of the person who served,
plus some
other conditions. It is possible that
Joseph
PRICE SR, was taking care of grandchildren, ch of his son Joseph L.
when he
died; but grandchildren didn’t quality.
Both Moses and Mary were over 21 when their father died, so the
application was rejected summarily.
However, in pursuing the matter from 1891 to 1894, Moses PRICE
and Mary
HUNT recorded much about their family and included bible pages from
several of
the family bibles. They included
affidavits from people who had known family members.
Moses Price stated his father, Joseph
Price was 68 or 70 when he died in Lawrence Co. Ms, in 1852, that he
was 5
feet, 6 inches in height, fair complexion, auburn hair, with gray eyes,
and
that he could not read, write or sign his name.
He enlisted in the war of 1812 at Liberty
in Amite Co. MS, on ___ Sept 1814 and served through the Battle of New
Orleans
__ Mar 1815. Moses stated that his
father served in the company commanded by Capt. William A. Lucas, Col.
HINDS
regt. And that he was mustered out at Natchez. (
The Joseph PRICE service record shows that
he was in Lt. Col Nelson’s Detachment of Mississippi Militia
Rebecca PRICE of Brookhaven, widow of Thomas
PRICE, stated she was intimately acquainted with Joseph PRICE and heard
him
talk about his services at New
Orleans
and at other places. Two of his comrades
had been Benjamin BRISTER and R. SHATTUCK, both of whom she knew. He oral statement was taken in 1893 and read
back to her before she made her mark.
James Hall (b 1816) of Lincoln Co made a
statement as a former neighbor who knew the family.
He thought all the children were dead except
for Moses. In 1892, he listed the eight
ch as Jefferson, Thomas Joseph, Cynthia, Kate, Martha, Polly, Moses. In 1893, he corrected his earlier statement
and gave the name and death year of each child as he recalled them as:
Mary , Living age 76
Martha, d 1874, age 55
Roderick, d 1834, age 12
Thomas , d 1869, age 44
Lucinda, d 1870, age 49,
Catherine, d 1885, age 52
Joseph, d 1886, age 51
Moses, living
Mary HUNT made her affidavit from Scott Co and made her
mark to it. As
she could not read or write. She stated
her father and mother were Joseph PRICE
and Celia ROLLINS, and that they were married in GA in 1803, that
neither has
been md before, that Celia d in May 1848 in Scott Co, that Joseph d in
1852 in
Lawrence Co. She Showed each deceased
brother’s name and Deceased sister’s married Surname and their years of
death

Martha Richardson, d 1874
Lodowick PRICE, d 1834
Lucinda RUSHING, d 1890
Joseph Price, d 1888
Catherine Newman, d 1870
Thomas PRICE, died 1869
In 1894, Moses PRICE in Scotts Co. stated his sister
Mary HUNT d 18 Mar
1894 and that he was the only living child of Joseph Price. He stated he was born 15 Mar 1819 in PIKE
co.. In other required statement for
pension or bounty land applicants, Moses PRICE stated he had been a
/union man,
had opposed Secession, had voted against it, had not held any
Confederate
office, and had opposed the War in everyway he could.
In one other statement, Moses Price deferred
from his sister on the county of death of his father and on the year of
death
of his mother. Moses said Celia Price died in March 1854 in Scott co,
but she
has not been identified on the 1850 census….
(It should be noted that oral statements of people who
do not read nor
write can be quite inaccurate on arithmetic details.
They do not add nor subtract very well, and
even be inaccurate on their own ages.
From the best available current information, Joseph and Lodowick
were
two names for the same person, known later as Joseph Lodowick PRICE.)
Moses PRICE included four bible records in support of
his claim. The pages were probably taken
from several
bibles. They were more accurate than the
oral statements.

could be the wife of James M. Hunt, but it does not match census
records. Juliann Anciville does not show
up in the
census record with the HUNT family, but there was an Anciville Price,
wife of
one Joseph Price. The reason F.W. Hunt
shows up so many times may be partly because pages from different
bibles were
used. Possibly, someone who did not read
nor write forgot it had been recorded and requested it be recorded
again.)

( Joseph Price, Jr.,
moved to Lawrence and Marion counties from where he lived at the time
of the
bible entry was made. He is know as Joseph Lodiwick Price, JR., by
descendants. It is quite probable that he
was with the
Hunt family in Scotts
County in 1850/.
The entries

found on
census records.)
Combining what is now
known, we can say that Joseph PRICE started his life on the Georgia frontier, possibly in Green
Count, about
1782-4, and that he died in Franklin or
Lawrence County, MS,
about Jan 1852. He probably moved with
Price and Rollins relatives to the frontier in southwest Miss Terr
before 1814,
lived there several years, then moved into Choctaw Indian lands when
they
became avaible after 1836, then moved back to southwest MISS where some
of his
children lived. About 1803 in GA, he md
Celia Rollins (c1785 NC- prob. D 1848/1854 Scott Co. MS) dau of a
Rollins
family moving from NC through GA ( In 1880, May Hunt stated her parents
were
born in NC. In 1900, Moses PRICE stated his at her was born in GA and
his
mother in NC.) Several of their children were born in GA before moving
to
MS. They may of have lived for a short
time in LA as one daughter shows 1813 birth LA.
Then they were in Amite Co. by 1814 and were still therein 1816
for the
pre –state census. Then they were in
Lawrence Co for 1818, pike county for 1831, then in Scott co by1840. His wife probably d in Scott Co, causing
Joseph to return to Lawrence or Franklin co,
The family homes were apparently on the Bogue
Chitto River,
which has branches in Franklin, Lawrence, Pike, and later Lincoln counties. It is possible that Joseph Price had a land
grant in the present city of Brookhaven,
but the grant which can be identified was to be to his son Thomas. Ch…. [there are 7 more page, I only typed 4 here,
