Michael Hendershot SR  was born 1674 Rhine Valley, Rhineland Palatinate, Germany near Mainz.  He lived at Naumberger Hoff during times of extreme hardships, times of war and religious persecution.  When he decided to try for a better life in the new World, Even through very few Germany had gone before him. Queen Ann England had invited some of those unfortunate Germans to come to England.  So Michael; and many other families made there way down the Rhine River to Rotterdam, from where he sailed for England 28 /July 1709.  Michael; departed Plymouth England on the ship Lyon 29 DEC 1709.  10 vessels in all known as the second Palatinate migration, arrived New York harbor sat Nuttens (now Governors) Island 13 June 1710 after perilous journey during which many became sick and died.  Many were diseased and many died after arrival.
Most of these emigrants were sent up the Hudson River to work on the Pine Tar Project, but those in poor health, unable to travel, were left in New York that first winter, as was Michael and family.   No record is found but it could have been Peter or Johnn Heinrich, and one of them died that winter o 1710-11.  Michael was sent up the Hudson to Livingston Manor in 1711, but returned to New York when the project failed that same year.  In the fall and winter of 1712-3 Michael and family along with other German families made their way to the wilds of west Jersey.
Michael located on the Millstone River, near the Raritan River.   In Franklin TWP, Somerset Co. Where he had the children baptized in Lutheran Church by the beloved pastor Justice Falckner of the New York City Church and recorded in the New York Register. After the death of Justice Falckner in 1723 his older brother, pastor Daniel Falconer, came from Pennsylvania to be pastor at Muhlstien, on the mountains and at Rochgeway, but he was not of the quality his brother and was disliked so that many parishioners abandoned the church and few services were held.   Many families moved away from the area 1727-29 so it is likely that Michael and his sons moved at this time to the societies tract of Tewksbury TWP, Hunterdon Co. NJ.  They settled in the Rockaway area between White House and Potterstown AND IS LISTED AS A RESIDENT IN 1735.
Michael was an elder in the church at Pottstown and at Pluckamin, on the mountains, in 1731 when he first to sign a call for a new minister to come from Hamburg, which minister did eventually arrive by the name of Augustue Wolf, but who was not like from the start being consisted incompetent and unworthy.  Efforts were made to remove him, which he resisted and resulted in a long and costly ;legal battle, carried eventually to the New Jersey Supreme /court by which Michael and the Elders paid heavily.
The church at Lebanon and at Pluckamin was built  1731 then in 1749 a new church was built at New Germantown,  (now Oldwick) to combine the three congregation, a new pastor by the name of John Albert Weygand was installed, the same year that Michael died. Pastor Weygand wrote in his dairy and account of the death Michael  of whom he had visited at his home shortly before.  This account may be read in early Germans of NJ.  Michael died at his home Rochgeway 17 July 1749, age 75, was buried by the pastor Weygand in the Lebanon Church yard at Potterstown. Which cemetery has be come lost.  That he was buried at Oldwick, Michael had lain sick on his bed for a year and half and called upon his god day and night for a happy death.  He had been a wheat and livestock farmer at Rockgeway as is shown by his account with
Jacob Janeway store at Middlebrook.  Much has been recorded of him as the was one of the first Germans of NJ, he was a strong character and leader in this church.  The True origin of the family had been researched and documented by John E. Ruch of Montreal and all are encouraged to read his publications and writings.   See C1 and A1 Gen --Rupp 30,000 -- Semmerdinger list  -- early Palatine migration -- early Germans of NJ - New York Church baptisms  - History of Lutheranism  -  the Albany Protocol -- Janeway accouunts  -  Hank Jones -- Court Records
