Little is known about Alexander
Graham.
Many of the records that would
tell us more
about his life have been lost.
Here we
have tried to make some connection to Anthony Graham that also settled
in
Newton Co. MS.
It is unclear whether
there was any relationship between the two.
Anthony came to MS pre 1820 with Robert and Zack , who all
showed up in
Wayne Co. with several other Grahams.
The other early Grahams’ in
Wayne
by 1830 are Neil, Walter R, William B, William. Some of these are also
found in
Covington county MS (along with my
Parks,
Cooksey/Price families that also move to
Newton
County), before these move to
Rankin County
Dougal Graham is in near by Marion Co.
MS.
There were also some Grahams in
early AL. Alexander was recorded in 1830-1870 census in MS.
During 1850 to 1870 Alexander age is recorded
inaccurate,
1850 he says he is 68, in
1860 he is 39, in 1870 he is 66.
His
oldest son William Graham had bible that proved birthdate of 1801
Knowing that William,
Alexander’s
son, was born in 1822 in
Mississippi.
William is never confused on census his
age,
his birthplace or the birthplace of his parents which was NC and TN.
William later has Cynthia, wife of
Alexander
in his household.
I have
a copy of a picture with William and his 3rd
wife with Cynthia.

The first little log house
build by Mr. Graham was rather hastily put up in 1832. In June
1836 he
build a double two story . He hewed long house from material
secured from
trees on his farm. the two room on the first floor were
separated by a
wide open hall way. the rooms on the second floor were used
for sleeping quarters. the kitchen was connected to the
back of
the kitchen by a plank wall.
the title of this property pass to
Alexander Graham to NC Graham.
to GK Graham . Mrs.
GK Graham & daug. are still living in the old house (1936) which before the days of rural mail
serves was in the center of Roscoe. Graham house is in the Oakland comm.
Alexander Graham's place now
owned by Lucy Graham located about 6miles east of Decatur was constructed about 1828
but not
finished until about 1832. It has had
quite a few changes made in the present building from the original but
it is
located on the original homestead of the first home built by Alexander
Graham
who moved with his wife to this place.
The property passed on down through the generations and now
(1993) is
owned by Ms. Grace Graham. The house was
remodeled several times and is now a smalled house.
1936:Cynthia was living and
told that she was happy and all was well until one day a big robust
Indian,
almost without a sound, came out of the woods near the house and
brandished a
long butcher knife. On approaching the
door he said, "Me want whiskey".
Mrs. Graham replied "I have no whiskey". The
Indian was very insistent and kept
demanding whiskey. Mrs. Graham kept
telling him she had none. After several
minutes he spied the grindstone in the yard and turned to go to it
muttering
"Give me whiskey - me want fire water". He
started grinding his knife and to the
mother in the house with her children praying that God spare them from
the
wrath of the Indian - he sharpened his knife for hours, but after 2
hours of
steady grinding he stole silently away
just as he had appeared into the woods.

Could this be where Alexander and Anthony are
"hiding" in 1810? (Robert & Christian should be listed but aren't
there. However, they might have been in the county. By 1810 they had at
least
five sons and there are two names obscured in the census that have that
many
children.)
Notice our friend Zachariah, elder for the Union Presb.
Church, is in the
county.
If this Neil is the same as the Neil in Scott Co MS 1840, age 70-80,
and the
same as the father of Alexander, at least we have two Grahams living in
the
same community who ended up in the same neck of the woods in MS.
