Little is known about Littleton Nathaniel Russell (LNR)
early life. He has not yet
been found in the 1850 census. One
legend says his father was John Russell,
grandfather was Abner Russell and that his grandmother was Indian (This
is from
Dr. John Russell of Jackson MS). LNR
say he is born in AL, Carr and Russell of Clark lived 4 miles from AL state line
in south
east corner. In 1880 census LNR says his father was born in NC and mother was
born in SC. In
1900 he says that his father was from GA,
his mother from AL.
Littleton
married in Clark Co. MS and later moved to Lawrence Co. MS with his
inlaws,
John Peter Carr and Maranda Alexander Rodus.
This is based on a letter wrote to John Russel, by is great
Aunt Myrtis Russel Stringer, sent to me by Mr Mullens in Jan 1990. Grandparent’s on Papa’s side (Andrew Leroy
Russell) Littleton N. Russell married
Mary Carr, John Russell married Mary
___, Abner Russell married Tokay the Indian maiden
-----------------------------------
Let us start with those in Clarke Co. Mississippi, since
that is the first place Littleton
can be found. It looks like atleast 2
set of Russell passed through Clarke area
pre 1860. There are also RUSSELLs
living in Choctaw Co. AL, and Lauderdale
and Wayne Counties
in Mississippi
at this time. In Clark
there are no marriage records before 1853, no divorcee record pre 1860.
Clark
court house was burned during the civil war by Sherman.
Wayne
County also lost
early records during
the civil war.

Family legend
TERRY PERRITT (no online computer
-1309 Trenton Sttreet, West Monroe, LA
71291) who descends from
AXOM/Axum/Axam R. ROBERTS & ELIZABETH JANE RUSSELL (d/o John & Mary)
through their daughter Ellen A. "Alma"
ROBERTS m. Dock Boyd (AKA Boyd Dock) Perritt.
This is what Mr.
Perritt told me... (SOURCE: Lee Strohm Harrell = ORIGINAL SOURCE: Terry
Perritt) (paraphrased from notes - telephone interview 21
April 2004): ...I
believe I am the original source of the
"John Russell DIVORCED Mary Russell"
information that got passed around and all
mixed up. Some years ago I
(Terry Perritt) went over to see Mrs.
LULA ROBERTS (she was Lula Cornelia Morgan Roberts... widow of John B.
Roberts s/o Axom & Elizabeth Jane Russell Roberts...LSH). She was 100-years-old. Mrs. Lula Robets was
the daughter-in-law of "Old Man Ax" & "Ma Jane." She (Mrs. Lula Roberts) TOLD me (Terry Perritt) that her father-in-law
"Old Man Ax" was the
s/o Henry Roberts, (Sr.)...she (Mrs. Lula Roberts) TOLD
me (Terry Perritt) that her mother-in-law "Ma
Jane" was the d/o of
John Russell & Mary
Knight. She (Mrs. Lula Roberts) said that
her mother-in-law "Ma Jane"
told HER (Mrs. Lula Roberts) that John
Russell DIVORCED Mary
Knight (Russell)
and then Mary (Knight) Russell married "Old Man
Ax's DADDY (2)
Henry Roberts,(Sr.)... and that "Ma Jane" married her step
brother "Old Man Ax." End of story. Kelly, please tell this story EXACTLY as
written if you share it...better yet, send my
email out.
"John divorced Mary"
as told from Mrs. Lula Roberts to Terry Perritt...he believes he
talked to her in the early 1980s...said she was 100 years old...said
she got written up in the newspaper for her 102nd...but, nevertheless,
some time ago. >From my records: Lula
Cornelia Morgan Roberts
b. 28 July 1878 d. 22 September
1983 (headstone dates Mt. Pisgah Cemetery Clarke
County MS) buried with her husband John B.
Roberts b. 06 March 1868
d. 23 October 1949 (headstone
dates).
Mrs. Lula C. Morgan Roberts was
certainly old enough to have known her mother-in-law
"Ma Jane" very well (Elizabeth Jane Russell Roberts
b. 12 August 1833 d. 03 February
1928 - headstone dates - Mt. Pisgah Cemetery Clarke
County MS) . And
"Ma Jane" was certainly old enough to have known HER mother Mary was divorced from her father John. A family divorce would be noted &
remembered (divorce certainly not the accepted thing at the time). I LIKE family
stories. They usually have some grain of
truth in them. I THINK this one is true. HOWEVER, there is NO divorce decree that I can
get anybody to find so far. It is a fact
that John Russell was NOT on the 1850 Clarke County
MS census...but since we thought he was DEAD we've
never looked elsewhere for him...now we will.

LNR Family legend according to Nina (Beatrice) Dunn, great
granddaughter of Adro (from a letter
wrote by TL Mullens wrote in 1987)
Mary Etta (Carr)
Russell’s maiden name was Dickerson and she was half Indian. Lit or his father was supposedly 3 years
old
when they came from a place named Russell, England to live somewhere
around
Norfolk VA. Lit has a sister named
Mary
who still lived in VA when Nina was a little girl.
She remembers them going to visit Mary and
talking about Mary’s modern gas light on their return.
They even took a train, which was a very big
deal. ** Nina recalls visiting Lit’s and
Mary Etta’s home in Fair
River when she was
a
child. For its time and place it was
consisted very grand. Typically southern
in style, it has a large central hallway and was raised somewhat off
the
ground. (She recalls playing under it.) Apparently, at least Litt was quite
well-educated, because Nina remembers that the house has a large
library with
lot’s of beautiful books. The dining
room was also supposed to be quite grand.
Nina remembers lots of silver goblets with gold inside. Note **Nina was born after 1920. The oldest she could have been when Mary Etta
Carr died was 3, she probably was younger..
Not sure what the deal about Mary Etta Carr’s maiden name. She was a Carr that married a Russell. Maybe they were talking about Mary Etta
Carr’s mother Her mother was Rodus. So I not sure what the Dickerson bit’s
is
about.

Another LNR
Family legend …Judson
Russell says …I recall being told that LN Russell was in fact very
educated and that his son Major Judson (my namesake) earned the name
due to a kind act during the civil war from a Union Major Judson due to
LN's education (he could read and write). In
addition to the library, I was told that none of the children or
grandchildren in later life were allowed at the dinner table with dirty
hands. LN would check.
Additionally, my father has often mentioned that we had Indian
blood in the family. He has
mentioned the name Rainwater as our ancestors.
++++++++++++++
Another family tradition tells that orignally five Russell
bother came to United States
from England and
lived in Norfollk VA
area before spliting up. This must of
been several generations before LNR, as census gives his father birth
place in
US
++++++++++++++
Mrs. A.L. Russell, husband was grandson of LN, said that LN
and a brother came to MS when he was 17.

Two John Russell are in 1820 census in two connecting county, across
the Pearl River from each other. Both are young (16-26) and looked to be
already married with a young male child. They could be the
same
person recorded twice once in MS and once in LA. Neither
one of these could be the John to marry Mary
Knight as they married in 1830
Marion Co. MS, unless she was a the second wife.
