Dream to Sleep

4:07 cannot sleep.
the fan whirs, rolls, purrs
softly and not to me
-to the ceiling, perhaps,
or singing to the darkness
swish tap tap

cannot sleep.
vanilla haze in smoky circles
what if the crystals of incense solidify
and fall like dust-
fairy dust-onto my head?
a sheet of snow, of sand, of sleeping dust coaxing me to bed

the walls
feel   so  bouncy
like rubber balls
a giant rubber ball with green and purple sparkles
darting round four corners

cannot sleep!
my breath
jagged
faster as I listen
faster
and
faster

count.
slowly.think sheep!
count heartbeats, seconds, days

onebody alone in this night
two shadows tango across the carpet
three chirps on the branch
four faces at the window
five flickers of the street lamp
six positions later
thirty seven hours without sleeping
and now!
4:08still awake.
