| Chapter Two
Back He nodded. Sure. Okay, he got up as the teacher looked at him. Sitting in the chair in the front of the room, Jene flipped his book open to the beginning of the last en-try. The light is dim and even with it being at my back, it hurts my eyes. Ive never really been sure why my eyes are so sensitive to light, but I know that at one point in my life they werent. I was young though and so I really dont remember it that well. Few understand why Ive come here, from the Colonies, to this small area in the middle of no where and all I can tell people is that they havent found this place yet. But I know that one day they will, and when that happens, Im not sure what will happen. They destroyed part of the Colony when they were looking for me, but that time they were too late, I was here. Next time I fear they will be here when I am here and my fait will come to a sealed close. I know this may sound strange to those of you who dont fully understand and I wish I could tell you, but to be honest I dont know all the details myself. And if I told a few of the things I do know, Im not sure what would happen to me, let alone you. You just have to listen to me and let things pass as they have. Day to day. Month from month. Year and year alike, you and I arent as the same as I would like us to be. I cant explain why, but I know we are different. Physically and mentally. You dont have to believe what Im saying and I know most of you wont, but I speak some form of truth. Truth for me anyway. Not necessarily the right truth, but the right truth for me. He paused. Because I know that to a certain extent we are all Hu-man, but to another extent I know I am not. Jenny looked up as he finished. Wow, Jene and you wrote this last night? Yes, he nodded. Along with drawing a picture. Im not sure what of, but it looks Human. He took the piece of paper from his book and looked at it. Yes, it is Hu-man now that I look at it. Very Human, except for the bone structure. Im not sure what that is. Thank you Jene, Mister Kei nodded. That was rather interesting and bizarre for a piece, we havent heard anything like that from you in a while. Jene stood up. I know. He sat back down and Jenny got up. He sat there and studied the picture. What had been running through his mind when he drew that the night before? It was most certainly Human. The shape of the body and such was Human, but the bone didnt look Human at all. It looked more mechanical, with wires looped around parts of the structure like veins flowing with blood. There was a smaller sketch of one of the hands. The right, the bones not even close to looking Human and so close to being machine. What did this picture mean? Was this one of the many answers Ive been look-ing for? The day ran its course just like any other. To second period, then on to third pe-riod with Petri. That, like usual, ran its boring course. Then to forth, Algebra Two, in the Math building. There was a quiz today and to Jenes surprise, most of the kids werent there. He questioned himself, but sat down in his seat like every other day. The bell rang and with a sigh from the teacher, she passed out the test papers. He looked at them for a second before he wrote his name to the paper and bean to work quietly. He tried to keep his mind on his work and for the most part did a good job, getting his test done and sitting back down. He had just set his English book on the table when two men stepped into the room. They were dressed in black suits, ties, and the whole deal, like some sort of agent from the movies. The two of them looked around the room and then spotted Jene. They stepped towards him as he stood up. The teacher stood up as well. What are you doing? Youre disrupting my class! Maam were here to take Jene DeVowe. One of the two, the bigger one, grabbed Jenes arm. Like hell you are! Jene ripped free and took a step back, closer to the teachers desk. What the hell do you want?! Im not going with you! Youre our property. The man reached out to grab Jene again, but Jene jumped aside. He turned with a punch, but the man caught his hand. Jene gasped as the mans grip tightened around his right fist. No! This is not how its going to end. Not in here! he came up with a kick, but the man caught his shin as well, picking him up off the ground. The teacher and other students in the room were all in shock as the two men turned with Jene. The one that had him threw him to the ground and when he stood up, they each grabbed one of his arms. He fought back only for a second, but Jene knew it was hopeless. This is not the way it was supposed to end! He closed his eyes as the three stepped out of the building and they took Jenes sunglasses off. So it is true. The littler guy said. You are sensitive to light. Jene gritted his teeth and opened his eyes. There were few kids walking about to the library and such. It was in the middle of class and not many people would be out. Most certainly not that many kids. Answer me this, Jene DeVowe. Why did you come here? Did you think we would not find you? No, I knew you would. I just didnt know when. Dont think Im going to tell you anything. I know whose property I am. So do we. The larger man looked down to Jene as they crossed the road and onto the soccer field. Thats why were here. Tell us what you know. I know nothing. The two of them threw Jene to the ground and he sat up on one knee. Even if I did, do you think I would tell you? No, we didnt think you would. The smaller man pulled a pistol from his jacket and leveled it against Jenes forehead. Jene started laughing. Eyes closed, he shook his head, knowing the people had now stopped to watch this event taking place in the soccer field. Why are you laughing? the larger man asked loudly. Because, if you kill me, then what? All your plans will be ruined. Youll die either way. The smaller man cocked the hammer back on the weapon. You can still change your mind. Come with us and lead our army that we are going to create. You did it, didnt you? Jene looked up to them and stood up. You were the ones to kill her, werent you? The taller man dropped Jene back to his knees as the smaller man pressed the cold metal against his forehead. Jene DeVowe. Im only going to say this once to you. After today this offer will be null in void. Do you except? He looked up. The sunglasses gone, blue eyes cold; colder then they had ever been before, the clouded sun now at his back. No, |
