Suggestions: A collection of ideas and tips that aided me in my recovery Read the book Hind's Feet On High Places - I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it helped remember why God wanted me to trust Him. Keep a journall Count the numbers of days since youve purged, started eating, etc. Celebrate anniversaries. For my one year anniversary, I bought a sterling silver ring to remind me whenever I look at it where I have been and where God has brought me. I plan on giving it to my future daughter. Throw away your scales, or only weigh on predetermined dates. I know that this is a biggie, but weighing fuels the fire and continues the obsession. I only weigh when I go to the doctor! Keep a journal Try to stay away from magazines that focus on beauty, weight, diets; movies that portray thin actresses, eating disorders, etc.; and other media sources that may cause you to love your addiction even more. Place a photograph of you as a younger child where you will see. I place a photo of me as a little girl in one of my journals which inspired me to become like that child again: carefree, full of life, and able to enjoy food. Call a friend. Its better to have another persons perspective or encouragement when you are down. Pray! By yourself some flowers and remember how beautiful they are all because God feeds and makes them beautiful! They dont worry about whether or not their petals or stems are too plump. God makes us beautiful, too! Read a book to get your focus off of your anxiety, food and body. Write a good-bye letter to your eating disorder and burn it or throw it away! Make a list of all the things that you are thankful for. Write a permission slip for yourself. I did this and some of mine include: to eat three meals a day without feeling guilty, to talk about my feelings, not to be perfect, and to take care of myself. Write down truths (ie, eating a meal will not make me fat; my body is Gods vessel to use; the grass is greener on the other side) so that when your mind is overwhelmed, you can ground yourself by reading those truths. Memorize the serenity prayer. Finally, one of the most helpful things that I did was to memorize Scripture and whenever I started to panic, fear, or hate myself, I would say them out loud. Write them on index cards and take them with you wherever you go. You never know what is going to trigger you. Some of the most helpful ones that I memorized are listed below. 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 Psalm 91 Psalm 121 Psalm 94:18-19 Romans 12:1-2 Psalm 34:4-8 |
