ABC is considering dropping some pounds in hopes of gaining ratings. The network is in negotiations with Endemol Entertainment USA for the reality series "The Big Diet," in which contestants compete to lose the most weight during a set period of time, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Originally a German series, contestants are housed in a luxury spa equipped with personal trainers to help them achieve their goal, although the producers also supply caloric temptations to keep the contestants from slimming down. Sinful sabotages include chocolate cakes and other fattening goodies that pop up in unusual places.
The contestant who manages to stick to the treadmill and carrot sticks, is awarded the weight they lost in gold.
ABC confirms that "Diet" is in development but won't elaborate, nor will Endemol. Sources say that the two companies are negotiating a 10-episode commitment for the project.
