Private Flute Instruction
About the Teacher
I have been playing and studying the flute for twelve years and am currently finishing my degree in Music Education with Texas Tech University. I plan to return sometime in the future for a Masters Degree in Musicology and Ethnomusicology. While in High School I was a member of the Region 25 All-Region Band and the UIL State Solo & Ensemble Contest as a Soloist. Since then, I have also attended masterclasses with renowned flutists such as Clare Southworth, Mike Mower, Thomas Robertello, Tadeu Coelho, Carol Wincenc, and Sir James Galway.
I have studied classical flute under Amy Taylor, Associate Principal Flute and Piccolo with the Honolulu Symphony and visiting professor at the University of Hawaii; Dr. Lindsay Beasley, Professor of Flute at Eastern New Mexico State University; and Dr. Lisa Garner-Santa, Professor of Flute at Texas Tech University. For Timber Flute, I have studied under Dr. Christopher Smith, professor of Musicology and Ethnomusicology and director of Vernacular Music Studies at Texas Tech Univesrity; Steve Cooper, performer on traditional flute and tin whistle in the band Last Night's Fun; and Lauren Joiner, performer on traditional flute and tin whistle.
About the Lessons
The primary instrument I will be teaching on is the metallic Western Concert Flute (typical in bands and orchestras). If the student is wanting lessons for the piccolo, baroque flute (traverso), or the traditional timber flute, arrangements will be made as needed. For younger students at the beginner level, a half-hour lesson once per week usually works best. For more advanced students and those with a serious interest in improving musicality and techique, or those who wish to continue with music in college, an hour is recommended.
Parents are always welcome to attend lessons with their children or to send along an audio recorder as desired.
What We Will Be Working On & Practicing Policy
For Beginners: (6th Grade)
For Intermediate Students: (7th and 8th Grade)
Lessons will be centered around continuing to develop tone and fundamentals. New techniques will be introduced and reinforced, such as vibrato and double-tonguing as it is appropriate for the student. Students will be asked to practice 4 hours per week, which can be split over all 7 days.
For Advanced Students: (9th - 12th Grade)
Lessons will continue to be centered around tone development, fundamentals, and developing technique. Students will be working primarily on All-Region/All-State music during the Fall semester and UIL Solo & Ensemble music during the Spring semester. Entry in both of these competitions is mandatory. Students will be asked to practice a minimum of 7 hours per week, to be split as convenient.
