The Gemini Blue Tuesday Sheet

“A Weekly School-wide Communication from Teachers to Families for School Success”

September 30, 2003

English – Mrs. Rezendes: Students turned in the final drafts of their memoirs today in red, orange, and yellow classes.  Green and blue will turn in their final drafts tomorrow.  For the rest of the week, we will be working on a new writing technique called thoughtshots.  Thoughtshots are used to show what a character is thinking.  Next week we will apply this writing technique by rewriting a well-known fairy tale from another character’s point of view.

Geography – Mr. Palagi: 1st Class: “Geography in the News”; Channel One; legends and keys; sunrise and sunset lines and compass rose; “Neighborhood Maps” are complete. 2nd Class: Habitats and people and the Geography Fair 2003. 3rd Class: Completing the “Geographer’s World”. 4th Class: Evaluating what we should know.

Math – Ms. Burgess: This week in Math, all students will be taking their first test of the year.  Red class will take a test on Chapter 1 on Thursday.  Students in the Orange class will take a Chapter 1 test on Friday.  Blue class will take a Chapter 2 test on Wednesday, and the Yellow and Green classes will take this test on Thursday.  In the classes leading up to the tests, we will complete review assignments and a graphic organizer to remind ourselves how to study for a math test.  Remember:  Mid-Term is Friday!  Have a great week!  J

Reading – Mrs. Wheeler: Our first test will be this week – Wednesday for red, orange, and green classes and Thursday for yellow and blue classes.  There are only two tests all term so it is important to study.  Students will need to define 8 active reading strategies, answer 10 analogies, describe THIEVES, and write an essay: How do PREVIEW, PRIOR KNOWLEDGE, PURPOSE, and PREDICT help you to be more efficient and effective?   They have flashcards, a preview web, notes, a paragraph template and a THIEVES handout to study from.  Remember to SHOW WHAT YOU KNOW!!! I will be after school Tuesday for anyone who would like help preparing for the test and Thursday to help with reading journals. Journals are due again on Friday.  I have been VERY impressed with the quality of most journals so far – ask your child to share his or her’s at home.  KUDOS everyone!!!!! J

Science-Mr. Fisher: Last week in Science, we learned all of our cellular organelles and had a potato (that’s a quiz) on Friday. This week, we continue our unit on cells by learning about the chemical compounds in cells and how the cell functions in it’s environment. We will have to complete our coloring books and make a series of flash cards to study from.

Our 2nd Science in the News assignment is due on Wednesday 10/1. Students who did not do as well as they had hoped on the first assignment have the opportunity to drop their lowest grade by completing all four assignments this term. You may access current events and our graphic organizer at www.mfisher.net. Email questions and concerns: [email protected]

Educational Support Specialist – Mrs. Baker: Mid-term is Friday. Are you pleased with your start in 7th grade or do you feel you need to make improvements? Late buses start this week so set new goals and stay to get extra help or to get homework done. Organization of materials and time management are two of the most important things that seventh graders have to learn how to do—it takes time and effort.  These are skills that are learned—they don’t just happen. Have a great weekJ!

World Languages—Mrs. Borstel, Ms. Barnes, and Ms. Sequira: Students should continue memorizing Vocabulary A terms and working on their advertisement posters. Projects are due October 9th. Language rotation begins again next Tuesday, October 6th.

Success Stamp Sheets will be collected last class on Wednesday. New Blue Success Sheets will be given out for the remainder of term 1.  We appreciate your support and any donations you might be able to make.  Thank you.
