Fort Buckley and the Low Battery It is often said that when Fort Buckley was disbanded the guns were removed and sent to the Low Battery. This is unlikely. While both sets were 64-pdrs the ones at the Low Battery were converted guns. That means that sat on wooden carriages, and the emplacements built for them would be totally incompatable with the other normal 64-pdrs. So unless serious work was done to alter the gun emplacements (I have yet to find any indication of such work being undertaken) then the guns from Fort Buckley could not have been emplaced at the Low Battery. Fort Kelburne Fort Kelburne was the first of the Tudor-Boddam style forts, and was the prototype for this design. It is often said that the first guns placed here were two 64-pdrs. This is possible in terms that there were many emergency batteries hastely thrown up, and it is possible that the two guns were here early on. What is certain is that they couldnt have been here during or after the construction of the fort. The 64-pdrs did not have a great range so it is unlikely that putting such guns at this site would be a huge deterrant. Again I have not found any evidence to say that 64-pdrs were ever at Fort Kelburne. Lyall/Island Bay gun? I have read in a number of newspaper articles about a 6-inch gun being emplaced at Island Bay. It seems that many suggestions were made regarding a gun being mounted around this general area. For instance I have read of plans to install the last of the 8-inch disapearing guns above Lyall Bay. Although this was largely rejected on the grounds that a HP disappearing gun would not be able to sufficently cover the area. Other suggestions included mounting a BL 6-inch gun to cover the area, but again this was never built. I believe in the end all these plans came to nothing due to financial concerns. |
