Many decades ago, the royal family used to drive through Bushy Park, on the second Sunday in May, to view the Chestnut trees in bloom. Remember, there was no television or football. In recent years, Chestnut Sunday has been revived. At first it was just a picnic, but it grew to be a parade in celebration of the Strategic Headquaters, Allied Expeditionary Force, which was near Sandy Lane, during the Second World War. You will have seen my reference to this camp on the previous page. Here are some pictures I took during 2006, the 2007 event having been washed out. The photos were taken within about half-a-mile from historic Hampton Court Palace, home of King Henry The Eighth of England. The 2008 event is to take place on Sunday 11th May. The parade starts at 12:30pm, going from the Teddington end to The Diana Car Park. The event ends at 4:30pm, though Chesnut Avenue will re-open to traffic soon after the parade.
