The newest and most technolgical revolution of cameras has produced the digital camera. Digital cameras enable you to take a picture, plug your camera directly into your computer and download your pictures straight onto your hard disk!

Imagine a journalist taking photos at a large event. He/she can take a picture, send it on a mobile phone/fax/email and it could be edited and put in press before other photographers have even got theirfilms developed.

PROS

No film! (Saves cost and time)
No developing or printing work.
No need to scan photos to get them on the computer.
Simple method of storage and simple to display.
Can be small sincethere is no film.

CONS

At current market prices, the digital camer is relatively far more expensive.
The more expensive digital cameras can still only achieve a fraction of the resolution, struggling to achieve even 600x800 resolution.
Most cameras are not flexible with fixed lenses and restricted shutter speed and aperture size.
In general, storage is about 1 Mb (2-3bitmap images/ 10-30 jpeg's) the memory can be expandable, but this costs more money.
jpegs are compressed and information is lost, thus further reducing image quality.

PROS vs. CONS

These cameras are getting increasingly affordable and is set to be the model and ideal camera of the future. Hopes that its photo quality will improve in the future seems founded - as for now, it is an expensive option, especially for amateur photographers.
