Brief History

The Cretan Nationalist Party was founded in 1990 and has been at the forefront of the campaign for Cretan autonomy and independence for almost 13 years. The CNP did not make any kind of electoral impact until today, Greece is the most undemocratic country of Europe, the Greek government does not recognise its national minorities, and any kind of regional or ethnic parties, so we are not a legalized political party. However, when the party won the support of our Cretan people, it became a landmark in our struggle for a Free Crete. During the 2000s the CNP launched one of its most influential campaign, "Crete is not Greece, Crete for Cretan people". The perception that the Cretan people were being denied its political and cultural rights and economic benefits generated by the discovery of wealthy minerals in its soil and sea, transformed Cretan and Greek politics and gave the CNP a major boost in both membership and popular influence in the Cretan society. The International Community must know that Greece doesn't recognise its regional communities and ethnic minorities, Greece is the only country in Europe with that repressive politics. The Greek Governments must understand that Crete has a different history ,culture and language ,and the first step for our autonomy is officialize the Cretan language. This prompted the Greek Government to honour its long-standing commitment to legislate for Cretan autonomy with its own Assembly. However, a referendum, wich will held in 2006 (we hope) will take place under rules which mean that 50% of the electorate had to vote Yes. The Yes campaign must win the vote, if it fails the plans for a Cretan Assembly will be shelved. The 1990s were a difficult period for the CNP and for Crete. The imposition of unpopular policies by the Greek colonialist Government, which had no moral mandate in Crete, was widely perceived as constituting a democratic deficit in the whole Greek society. Towards the end of the decade the CNP started to advance again against the Greek Governments and re-ignited the Cretan autonomy and constitutional debate. The run-up to next General Election will see a period of intense debate about Crete's constitutional future which came to nothing when the Pasok won Crete but had to watch the ND sweep to power in Athens again. Opinion polls suggest that most Cretans now want the Cretan Assembly to have more control over how Crete should be governed. The CNP is better placed than at any time in its history to make that happen. The long struggle for a Cretan Assembly is not over yet, the campaign for the independence of Crete goes on.
