Review from CDNow
Bomfunk MC's is one of the best known bands abroad
right now. They have been amazingly famous already in Finland, but now
they are the number one in Swedish single chart with Freestyler, which
has sold already double platinum. In Finland their debut album, In Stereo,
has sold already over 100 000 copies and it is at the moment fourth best
sold album in English language all the time in Finland! Only Baccara, Queen
and Finnish band Hurriganes have sold more copies than Bomfunk MC's, but
it is possible that In Stereo will be soon the most sold album in English
all the time in Finland. Bomfunk MC's is formed by Raymond "B.O.W." Ebanks
and Ismo "DJ Gismo" Lappalainen, but they have also a live band consists
of drummer Ari Toikka and basist Ville Mäkinen. Also breakdance group
Savage Feet is always with Bomfunk MC's. Their producer is famous Finnish
Jaakko "JS16" Salovaara, who is very known from his solo career in Finland
and even in the United States.
Their first single, Uprocking Beats, proved already
that from Finland can come excellent bands, which sound international.
Uprocking Beats was successful especially in Finland, in Australia and
in Germany. The second single, B-Boys & Flygirls, was the real breakthrough
single in Finland. B-Boys & Flygirls contains some guitar and it is
very energetic. Sky's The Limit was released only as a promo single for
radios in the summer '99. The singer Kärtsy from Waltari gives some
personality for the track. He does the singing nice and Raymond Ebanks
does the rap. Sky's The Limit is absolutely brilliant track and the guys
are working great together. The third single, Rocking, Just To Make Ya
Move, is again very different single from previous releases. It is very
fast track with Raymond's rap, robot voice, great sounds and attractive
hook. Freestyler has been a smash hit already in Finland, Sweden and Australia
and at least Norway, Denmark and Germany are still coming. Freestyler is
a very special track. It is very attractive and the chorus is great. Also
the intro is superb.
The latest single in Finland is Other Emcee's, which won't maybe be released abroad. It uses very much robot voice and it is singing while Raymond is rapping. Stir Up The Bass continues with great sounds and with DJ Gismo scratching. Very good is also the 10th track, Rock, Rocking Tha Spot. Electric guitar has a very important role and Raymond's rap sounds very good. The title song In Stereo sounds funny and a little bit messy, but it has its own place in this album. Besides Kärtsy there are visitors in the album J.A.K. from Cool Sheiks in track 1,2,3,4 and Bu Bu Man in Fashion Styley. 1,2,3,4 is the most rap stylish song in the whole album. Fashion Styley is the most special track. It sounds quite blurred and weird at first, but later it sounds positively different. From Uprocking Beats and B-Boys & Flygirls there's also a mix included and they are working great. Spoken Word ends the album. It's really only speech, but still fascinating.
In Stereo is really maybe the best album, which
is ever released in Finland. It is practically a perfect album. You certainly
must check this out. Bomfunk MC's represents new modern Finnish music,
which can be successful at least all over Europe.
