Boyz II Men weren't the first four dapper guys to sing in perfect harmony, but in this adolescent-male-crazy climate, they're virtual messiahs. For an entire generation, they are all the proof needed to show that you can inspire fits of orgasmic rapture in countless young women by choreographing your dance steps, mouthing mushy love songs, and wearing matching outfits.
How else to explain the glut of pale imitators that bum-rushed the charts while Boyz II Men was off working on its first new release since 1997's Evolution? But the band's long-awaited follow-up, Nathan Michael Shawn Wanya, isn't the expected slap in the face to the new generation of vocal groups.
Instead, the album sticks firmly with the outfit's seemingly indestructible, if slightly dull, formula, which it's been using in one form or another since 1992: smooth ballads + neutral lyrics x trendy R&B producers = gargantuan sales.
One listen to such mellow, but funky R&B tracks as "Pass You By " and "What the Deal" are enough to suggest that this album has more in common with Destiny's Child's The Writing's on the Wall than 'NSync's No Strings Attached. There are no cheap explosives, jutting pelvises, or nagging melodies. Just a simple mix of laid-back jams with faux-Spanish guitars and icky lines like, "Let me put my love inside you / And make you tremble inside."
