| For pickups I chose Kent Armstrong, their PAF equivalent for the neck (M213K) and their OEM distortion humbucker for the bridge (M214K). Circuit connection was a simple 2 pickup, 2 volume, and 2 tone controls, with a 3-way selector switch. Information is available from lots of places, including guitarnuts. After reading reviews at Harmony-Central.com I decided that Kent Armstrong humbuckers appear to be a well-kept and underpriced secret. I'm certainly happy with the sound, which can produce anything from sharp highs (courtesy of the bridge pickup) to mellow, bell-like tones (neck with a bit of tone taken off). Sustain is excellent, although probably less than a good Gibson. The very dense jarrah body seems to favour bass-notes (accoustic instrument makers say that it gives instruments a "dark" tone. This wood is very old and extremely dry, so probably not typical of a guitar made with younger jarrah. I opted for low-cost hardware, making sure only that the tuners had a 16:1 ratio. Some of the same (non)brand that I put onto my Maton accoustic turned out to be better than the originals for holding tune and smoothness of adjustment. Total weight with all the hardware added is 4.6 kg (about 10 lb 2 oz) which is around the normal Les Paul weight, even though it's quite a bit thinner. . |
