| Visualization In magick, the process of forming mental images of needed goals during rituals and spellcasting. Also called creative visualization and magickal visualization. Wand A stick used to trace circles, draw magickal symbols on the ground, invoke or conduct spiritual energy, and stir cauldron brews. The wand is the emblem of power. It represents the element of Air and is sacred to all Pagan deities. Warlock A word stemming from the Old English WAERLOGA, meaning an oath breaker and used derogatorily by the church as a name for a male Witch. However, in Wicca, the word warlock is seldom, if ever used. Both make and female practitioners of the Craft are called Witches. Watchtowers Also known as the Directions or the Quarters, these are the four directional points at the perimeter of a magick circle to which each of the four spirits of the elements are called as guardians during the beginning of a ritual. Weatherworking The art and practice of controlling atmospheric conditions by means of magick, prayer, or supernatural power; magickal control of the weather, most commonly used to make or stop rain. Wicca An alternative name for modern Witchcraft; a Neo-Pagan nature religion with spiritual roots in Shamanism, having one main tenet: the Wiccan Rede. Wiccan Rede A simple and benevolent moral code of Wiccan expressed as follows : Eight words the Wiccan Rede fulfils; An it harm none, do what ye will. Widdershins A word used by Wiccans to mean anti clockwise. This motion symbolizes negative magickal purposes and is mainly used to uncast the circle at the end of a ritual. Witch Any individual, male or female, who practices Witchcraft; a Wiccan; one who worships the Gods of the Old Religion. Witch Bottle A glass bottle or jar that is filled with various objects, charged with magickal power, and used for either good or evil. For example, a Witch bottle used for the art of love magick may contain such items as a lock of hair from the man or woman who affections are desired, rose petals, heart shaped candles, love amulets, Venus ruled herbs, and other love related things. After a Witch bottle has been filled, it is usually capped tight and sealed with wax from an appropriate colored and/or scented candle. A magickal incantation is recited over the bottle and then it is either buried in the ground or hidden in some secret place until the Witch who cast the spell decides to break it, usually by smashing the bottle when the moon is in its waning phase, or by emptying the contents into a moving body of water. Witch Hole In the art of magick and sorcery, a small hole which is dug in the ground or in a flower pot during the proper phase of the moon, filled with a variety of magickal objects and then covered with dirt as part of a spell or ritual for either good or evil. Witchcraft The Old Religion; the Craft of the Wise; the practice of folk religion that combines magick; Nature worship, divination, and herbalism with bits and pieces of various pre-Christian religious beliefs, notably those of the Druids and the ancient Egyptians. Wortcunning The knowledge and use of the secret healing and magickal properties of herbs; a word used by folk healers, Witches and Wiccans of all traditions to mean the practice of herbalism. Wortcunning has been associated with the Old Religion since ancient times. |
