The Height Problem (Mwahahahaha)
Ever seen a picture of Kurama and Hiei standing together?  *sweatdrops* Yeah... there's a very noticeable difference in height right there.  So, you hentai fanfic writers out there might wonder what to do when it comes to writing a lemon scene or a PWP.  Well, that's up to you *evil laugh*, but how do you make it seem to the reader that there aren't any awkward nesses when it comes to the height?  Well, actually, that hasn't stopped you before, has it?  So no problem there... But if you're trying to convince someone that Kurama and Hiei makes the best possible couple (which is quite true, by the way, I mean, look at all the shrines out there...), and they ask, isn't Hiei really short?  Respond by showing them a picture from the end of the manga, where Hiei isn't so short anymore (try the nearly-fully-naked picture from vol.18, that'll shut them up), and then warn them that if they ever call Hiei short again, he might drop by from Makai and kill them.

When the two first met, they were about the same height, because Kurama was in his human form, and he was only a boy.  However, if Kurama had been in his youko form then, you can safely say that Hiei was only half his height...  As the series progresses, Hiei grew a little taller.  By the end of the series, both Kurama and Hiei had increased in height, but mostly Hiei.  He probably came up to Kurama's shoulders, not counting the hair then.  Perhaps that was the result of intense training on Hiei's part, or maybe when Hiei was chopped in two, and Mukuro decided to bring him back to life, she gave him longer legs.  It certainly looked that way from the manga.  These two are probably the only yaoi couple who have a big height difference unexplained by age.  Hiei is probably a little over a hundred years old, and Kurama probably has a few hundred on him.  So, you can't say that theyre not compatible in age.  In Makai, age doesn't really matter because everyone lives hundreds unless killed.

Or, you can look at this another way.  There is usually a seme and uke in each couple.  Most of the time, the roles are set, but some couples tend to switch around a lot (like the Taito coupling; you never know who's more aggressive...).  For Kurama and Hiei, Kurama is usually seen as the uke, the one on the bottom, and Hiei is the seme, the one on top (I'm getting the seme/uke concept right, right?), most likely because of their natures.  Kurama's normally gentle in his human form, and Hiei's aggressively violent (dude, he's a fire demon!), but if you can't get comfy with the mental image of Kurama on the bottom, even thought he's taller, think of it this way: When Kurama is in youko form, he is even more manly (evil, aggressive, powerful, whatever) than Hiei, so then Kurama would be the seme in this case.

Yoshihiro Togashi-sensei has surely noticed the height problem himself, because why else would he try to draw Hiei and Kurama to a closer height every time they're standing together?  Not to mention the fact that everyone's favorite YYH character can't always stay so short (favorite as proven by two popularity contests through out the running of the series).  Either Kurama looks more small and vulnerable than usual, or Hiei is in a position to look bigger than he really is.  Whatever it was, the height problem was fixed in most of the manga scenes.  So, since the series is over, it is up to the fans to continue the stories (fanfics) and deal with the height problem by themselves.  I notice that many fans (including myself) use Hiei's shortness and Kuwabara's resentment towards him as comic relief ("Shrimp!" "Nani?!").
