| What Is A II-V7-I cycle? | ||||||||||||||||||||
| -A ii-V7-I cycle is when you start on a minor 2nd chord, then to a dominant 5 chord, to a 1. This cycle can be very useful when going to a I or a IV. For Example: In the key of F major, F is the 1 chord. The ii of an F chord is Gm. The V7 of an F chord is C7. Hence a ii-V cycle of F is Gm - C7 - F. What is the ii of Bb?.....(Cm), then the five is what?......(F7). That is an overview of ii-V7-I cycles | ||||||||||||||||||||
| How can I use a ii-V7-I cycle? | ||||||||||||||||||||
| There are many ways to use ii-V7-I cycles. The most common usage of the cycle is going to a I, or going to a IV chord. Look at Amazing Grace going to a IV chord for example. Amazing Grace in F F F/A Bb Amazing grace, how sweet the sound...... Now lets use a ii-V7-I cycle! F Cm F7 Bb Amazing grace how sweet the sound...... "Thanks, Thanks," F C F F/A Bb Thanks, Thanks I give you thanks, for all you've done..... Using ii-V7-Cycle (another ii-V7-I cycle) F C F Cm F7 Bb Gm C7 F Thanks, Thanks I give you thanks, for all you've done...... I am so blessed |

| Now lets add more to our chords to help them sound better. Just as a point of reference, you can usually always add extensions without getting in trouble. Always add 2nds, 7ths, 9ths, 13ths when possible. Lets take this progression and add some extension. Make the ii a m9 chord (good voicing R.H. 7b-2-3-5/L.H. 1-5-7b) then lets make the V7 a V13 chord (6-2-3-5/1-5-7b) and end it with a I^9 (7-2-3-5/ 1-5) . For example: In F Gm9 (R.H. F-A-Bb-D/ L.H. G-D-F) C13 (E-A-Bb-D/ C-G-Bb) F^9 (E-G-A-C/ F-C) |
