Xenogears System: Playstation Date: 1998 This game was one of Squares first RPG's to use voice acting, which was well done. Graphics: The game is in a complete polygonal world, which has a great sense of depth and size, far surpassing that of Breath of Fire 3. The well-drawn anime cut scenes only add to the action. The only real complaint about the graphics is the tendency for the characters to get pixilated. SCORE: 8 Music: Xenogears has a top quality sound track featuring many well-done track, from holy church themes to soothing over world music. The only flaw I could really point out is the lack of any stand out tracks. SCORE: 8 Story: Xenogears complex and highly dramatic story is something right out of a good anime. The plot twist and turns are surprising the revelation of secrets is top notch. The villains in this game are well developed and "cool". If there is anything bad to say about this game's plot, is that the story is so focused on the reveling secrets with great surprise. You will find replaying the game is less exciting, because the plot is twist and turns more so than character building. SCORE: 9+ Gameplay: Xenogears feature the amazing "press button 6 times to attack an enemy system". Like Chrono Cross you have different levels of attack you can execute and a limit power meter for "fuel". This mean you press buttons until you drain the meter which is cool at first due do the cool animation of the fight moves, but gets real lame after some time and god awful when replaying. SCORE: 4 Innovation: The anime cut scenes with voice acting may be new for Square, but they’re not new. SCORE: Little/Some Replay: For some reason this other wise great game is just not very fun to play though again, the story starts to lose it greatness the 2nd time through. The fighting really gets on your nerves and disc 2 is a nightmare the 2nd time around. SCORE: Little Note: Disc 2 is just stupid, but the first time it's kind of cool. Well not really, but it's different. Overall: A great game even if disc 2 and the replay value sucks SCORE: 8.5+ |
