About Me

Final Fantasy 2 Systems: NES Date: 1988

This game came out in Japan and was never released in the U.S. It was one of the first RPG to have no exp. based level system.

Graphics: The visuals in this game are very similar to the first. The color palette in the game still seems very limited by the system.

SCORE: 5

Music: The games music quality is the same as the first. Which is to say it is good for the Nintendo games of the time,

SCORE: 6

Story: This game is a big milestone for RPG story construction. Individuals are created and fleshed out; there is a consistent story, more than hero saves princess from many early games. This Final Fantasy started the tradition of well thought out storyline even if its story is weak by today’s standards. This game brought about such standards as hero becomes evil only to see the error of his ways, which was seen in later Final Fantasy such as FF4. This game also has the evil empire theme, seen in such future classic as FF6 and FF7.

SCORE: 6.5+

Gameplay: Final Fantasy 2 had major differences compared to the rest of the games in the series. For example the whole idea of level up is thrown out, instead statistics like magic power, attack power, etc are increased through use. This can lead to many odd things like a character with very low attack power and extreme magic. Another system present in the game is the password system, whereby the player’s party learns words from various towns’ people and such. These words can be said to other important non-playable characters (NPC's) in the game for varying results, for example you might get an item or the story will progress.

SCORE: 7+

Innovation: As I mentioned before Final Fantasy 2 feature a new way of gaining "levels" and a password system that allows some input of what you say to someone. The "systems" seen in this game have pop up in later RPG's like the Saga series.

SCORE: 8

Replay: Unlike Final Fantasy 1 this game does not feature any sort of job system or way to customize your party. Also there is not a lot of hidden item and/or side quest thus lowering the replay value further. But to be fair the odd systems in the game do indeed warrant mastery though extended play due to their uniqueness.

SCORE: 3

Overall: As a sequel, it best the original and breaks new ground in many ways.

SCORE: 7+
