Final Fantasy

System: NES Date: 1987

Final Fantasy was an RPG pioneer, breaking even more ground than Dragon Warrior.

The name Final Fantasy came about because Square was putting all it's resources in to this game and it success or failure meant the success or failure of the company thus it was Square's Final Fantasy.

Graphics: The simple sprites that traverse upon the equally simple over world may have been impressive in 1986, but that was 14 years ago.

SCORE: 5

Note: Graphics compared to other games for system!

Music: Final Fantasy shows were some of the classic themes from the series came got there start. Infamous tracks such as the Prelude and the Final Fantasy theme make their first appearance in this game. Final Fantasy also has some memorable themes unique to the game, like the great maytota cave theme. Even though this game music may have been top notch in its time, the 16-year-old hardware shows.

SCORE: 6

Story: Final Fantasy establishes the game play for the Final Fantasy series, but the epic story scope of the games is just a few Final Fantasy's down the line. FF events are mostly linked together via fetch quests rather than a coherent storyline. Characters development also won't get any gold stars, mostly because there is none This elements make for a low, low score.

SCORE: 2

Gameplay: Though this game is 14 years old you can still see some of that FF charm.

This game was made before the time of the ATB system; instead a standard turn based battle system is used. FF1 has 4 person parties, which surpassed the only other big RPG of the day, Dragon Warrior. Final Fantasy also has a limited "job system".

SCORE: 6.5

Innovation: Final Fantasy brought about current RPG main stays seen in almost all games since. While Dragon Warrior had only 1 playable character in the party, Final Fantasy has 4. Final Fantasy is also one of the long game taking as long as 35+ hours to complete, much longer than Dragon Warrior or even Dragon Warrior 2, or almost any other game at the time. Final Fantasy had a much more diverse magic and fighting system than Dragon Warrior 1 or 2.

SCORE: 9++

Replay: This game is long and has many secrets. The different "jobs" also supply a reason to play this game again.

SCORE: 3

Overall: A long and challenging game.

SCORE: 6.5
