Chrono Cross

System: Playstation

Date: 2000

This is the sequel to the masterful Chrono Trigger.

Graphics: One of the best looking games for the system, Chrono Cross has the best fluidity of movement in any RPG. While Final Fantasy’s of recent memory have had long and eventually tedious summon spell, Chrono Crosses' are much shorter and are amazingly detail beyond belief. Along with fantastic spell animation each of the over 40 playable characters is a amazingly drawn. One of the best looking games for the Playstation.

SCORE: 9.5

Music: Though I have heard the music being given much praise I do not think the sound track is unbelievable, however the game does have good music. The sound quality of the music is fantastic you can discern each instrument used in some tracks. Also there are stand out track such as the other world theme music which is great.

SCORE: 8

Story: Chrono Trigger had quite a memorable storyline mostly because of the truly likable and unique characters, this game however has over 40 characters so you only get to know about 2 or 3 of them well. Many of the 40+ guys seem cool enough, its just there is never really much time to know them well so you find yourself mostly judging characters on how cool or funny the character looks. There is nothing wrong with the storyline as a whole, as a matter of fact it is quite good it's just the character development is lacking for much of the cast. But to have any development at all for over 40 characters is something amazing and Square should be praised for it.

SCORE: 8.5+

Gameplay: Instead of using the traditional ATB system of Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross uses a system that has something in common with Xenogears. You have different levels of attack you can do to enemies with a certain amount of power to start. Though this seems cool at first because you can attack any time with any character almost, it wears thin after a while and I found myself wishing for the A TB. Other wise there are many items to obtain and weapons and spells to get.

SCORE: 9

Innovation: Chrono Cross uses the great new game+ system just like Chrono trigger. Chrono Cross is the first RPG to successfully handle many characters. There are over 40 in the game each with there own pattern of speaking and secrets they have to find, while they are not flesh out like in Chrono Trigger they are flesh out more than any RPG that has had this kind of sizable cast before like the Seduce and shinning forces of the world. Present after you beat the game and play in the new game+ mode is the amazing fast forward button! This allows battle's to go much quicker and allows you to walk though town and dungeons with speed.

SCORE: 10

Replay: With new game+, fast forward button, lots of characters to find, massive amount of secret spells and weapon and multiple endings you have quite a reason to play this game again.

SCORE: 9.5

Overall: It's not Chrono Trigger but it still a great game.

SCORE: 9+
