Summary
The year is 1984. The vampire Lestat is awakened from his slumber by sounds from radios, TV, and a rock group rehearsing nearby called Satan's Night Out. Upon awakening, he joins the band, and discovers the book Interview With the Vampire. Appalled by Louis's view of the events, he decides to write his own autobiography, appropriately titled The Vampire Lestat.
Born in Auvergne, France, Lestat lived a life of poverty and bitterness. The only one in his family that he actually loved was his mother, although he sometimes hated her for not teaching him to read. When he was 20 or so, Lestat ran away to Paris with friend Nicolas de Lenfent. He dreamt of fame as an actor. Unfortunately, his plans were interrupted by a vampire named Magnus who chose him as his heir. He abandoned his fledgling the night he was made in search of peace and oblivion in a blazing fire.
Only knowing the essentials, Lestat had to learn about vampirism on his own. When his dying mother came to him, he made her into a vampire. Amidst their adventures in Paris, they encountered a coven living under Les Innocents, a Paris cemetery. The coven intended to destroy mother and son, but instead, Lestat destroyed their convictions that they are Satan's children and therefore puts an end to the coven. Subsequently, he made Nicolas into a vampire, but his friend ends up hating him.
In the years that followed, he sought out Marius, a child of the millennia. After a decade of searching, Lestat found him and he explained the origin of vampires as told to him. Lestat then awakened Akasha, mother of all vampires and drank from her blood. After leaving Maruis, he journeyed to New Orleans where he made Louis and Claudia. In 1929, he went into the ground, and slumbered for over half a century.
Yet an autobiography is not enough, so Lestat forms a rock band and releases and album revealing secrets of vampires, ancient ones and fledglings alike. He also plans to hold a concert at the Cow Palace, knowing there are other immortals waiting there, ready to end his life. When the concert is over, Lestat is left unharmed, but as he lays down to rest, an ancient one comes for him, the mother of all vampire.
