History of Jazz
After the ending of World War I, a social evolution came to effect. This was an era of carefree life and of the flapper or lost generation. There were many night clubs, as dancing became less formal.
Only one type of music could suit this style of dance--jazz. Jazz originated at the end of the 19th Century and took off in the early 20th Century. It had many birthplaces: New Orleans, St. Louis, Memphis, Kansas City, and many more. New Orleans was the main jazz place. African Americans contributed greatly to the art of jazz dancing. By 1900, there were so many ethnic backgrounds and cultures there, why, it was a culture fair!
A jazz show or performance had at first a rhythmic section, and following it, a melodic section. The performers would come in at the middle or end of the music. It became very popular as an informal yet fun way to express yourself.
Today, jazz has a different form. Though it still has much of its jazzy style, it is safe to say it is slightly more modern. But, jazz still has its flair, and is still one of the most fun forms of dance!
