Hi. I am DR. Kristin Edwards. I received my B.A. from Haverford College in 1996. In 1990 I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with my veterinary degree. Since then, I have been working in small animal private practice. In the winter of 1998, I enrolled in the acupuncture course through the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS). I received my certification in August , 1999. Currently I am enjoying practicing acupuncture and am excited about the results it has produced. I offer acupuncture services for dogs, cats and horses. I also offer skeletal manipulation services for horses.
Acupuncture is a wonderful modality for pain management, chronic problems and healing. As a pain management therapy, it is fabulous in helping older, arthritic animals, back pain and post-surgical pain. Horses who experience muscle, joint and tendon soreness respond extremely well. The animals become more comfortable and their quality of life improves. Chronic conditions such as kidney or liver failure, digestive disorders, ear infections often respond well. Acupuncture does not reverse organ failure, but it helps maintain the part of the organs that are still working and stabilize the animals. After surgery, pain can be alieviated and healing improved through acupuncture.
Acupuncture is not a quick fix, it can take anywhere from 1-8 treatments to see improvement. It is most beneficial if the owners commit to 6-8 treatments to start. I prefer to treat the animals once weekly until improvement is consistent, and then taper the treatments to meet the needs of the animals. Thereafter maintainence treatments are recommended to keep the animals in a balanced state. The term "balanced state" is the key. Alternative medicine strives to prevent disease states by keeping the body in a state of functional harmony. When problems do arise the treatment focuses on how the body can heal itself.
