| 4 Sunday morning, I woke up and threw on a nice shirt and my only skirt. I then go to the bathroom and put on eyeliner. I had yet to make up my mind. But then, I have until church is over to decide. 'And I'm not dressing up for anyone, this is how I look every Sunday and Wednesday,' I say to myself. I finish getting ready and go to the door to wait for Hillary and her aunt. They show up after a few minutes and I go out and climb in. We arrive at church and Hillary and I go down to class. We read parts of the bible and then the bell rings to go upstairs. We gather our coats and head upstairs. Once upstairs, I spot Nathan. I grab Hillary's hand and pull her into the other room. We find a seat and sit down to talk. "I don't know who I would rather have. I made a list but then ripped it up. I'm confused," I say. "You could ask them for more time. Ask them to wait until tonight for an answer. That will at least give you some more time. And maybe someone else will ask you out. Besides, you only got asked by one of them. Maybe Josh will show interest," Hillary suggests. I blush. Nathan walks in and stands behind Hillary. "Ben and I are wondering if you came to a decision," Nathan explains. "Nathan, are you asking me out as well, or just showing interest because Ben likes me?" "I don't know, can you just decide between us?" Nathan demands. "Tell Ben that I will let you guys know at church tonight." The music starts and more people file into the room. Nathan walks to the other side of the room and up a few rows. When church ends, Hillary and I walk out to the car, followed by Hillary's aunt. We ride quietly back to Hillary's house. When we arrive there, Hillary and I go up to her room. Once there, we change into "barn clothes" and go out to feed the horses. 5 "I take it that going after Nathan is a bad idea?" Hillary questions. "He doesn't even like me! He only wants me because then I would be off limits for Ben," I complain, thinking about how dumb I was to start liking him. "Can I ask you a question?" I nod. "Who do you like more? Ben, Nathan, or Josh? And don't go by who you think is cuter. I already know who you think is, and that's Josh. Who means more to you?" Hillary asks. "Well, I've barely talked to Josh. And Ben and I have known each other for a long time. But Nathan is completely out of the running. Maybe I'll just go out with Ben. I mean, Josh hasn't asked me out or anything." "But he could. I've seen him watching you. I've tried going after him, but he's too young. Besides, I kinda like Nathan. He's more my..." "Hillary, you and Sierra have a phone call. Go ahead and take it upstairs on the speakerphone," Hillary's aunt interrupts. "I wonder who would be calling for both of us. Barely anyone knows you are here," Hillary says as we head upstairs. Once there, Hillary picks up the phone while I call down to her aunt that we have it. When I go back into the room, Hillary looks at me and smiles. "It's Ben, Josh, and Nathan," she whispers. I blush. She puts the phone on speaker and I say hello. The three boys are on speaker as well. "Still have some thinking to do, Sierra? Well, Ben and I were talking and I have searched my heart, and what I found is that I don't care for you the way you deserve. But, Ben cares for you that way. And, as we found out, so does Josh. So, you aren't deciding between my brother and I, but between Josh and my brother," Nathan explains. "It was really only about Ben, I feel, because Nathan, you never asked me out. And now, Ben is, again, the only one to have asked me out. So, I think my real decision should be whether or not I would like to go out with Ben!" I exclaim. "What? The kiss would imply that I want to be with you. And Josh wants to ask you out. He even wrote you a letter...ugh...never mind. We'll see you tonight." Click. I hear Nathan hang up and I'm mad. I hit the off button on the phone. Hillary and I go down and out by the horses. I am to help out all the time by putting the hay in the bin and taking it back for the horses. By the time that I got back, Hillary had filled up the water buckets and was petting Zips, her horse. 6 What are you going to do? Nathan accidentally let it slip about Josh liking you and that he wrote you a letter. And he wants to ask you out," Hillary explains. "I think I'll wait until tonight. If Josh doesn't ask me out, then I'll just ask Ben out. I mean, I really like him, as you know," I say. Hillary agrees that it's a good idea. "Let's go watch that movie we rented!" We both go upstairs once more, to change out of the barn clothes. Then we go down and pop in the movie. About halfway through the movie, Hillary's aunt calls us for lunch. So we pause the movie and go to the kitchen. Once there, Hillary dishes things up while I get us some milk. After lunch, we finish the movie, then it's back upstairs for us. We pull out our backpacks and start the homework. A few hours later, we are called down to eat dinner. After that it is back upstairs to put church clothes back on. Then we all pile into the car and are on our way to church. We arrive there just as the music starts. So we climb out of the car and go take a seat in the second row. 7 In front of us is Josh. Josh's mom turns around to talk to Hillary's aunt. Josh turns around and gives a note to Hillary. I don't see this, however, because I am turned around and talking to Mrs. Jenson, my favorite teacher at church. Hillary taps me on the shoulder and hands me a note, telling me that Josh said it was for me. Hillary's aunt ends the conversation with Josh's mom and turns around to talk to Mrs. Jenson. I unfold the note and begin to read it. It' starts: Sierra, I would like to get to know you better. To accomplish this, I would like to ask you out. I pause to look at Josh and then continue reading. I know that Ben likes you and I am willing to fight for you. I think that you are the most beautiful girl on Earth. Will you go out with me? Love, Josh I look up at Josh upon finishing the letter and he is looking back at me. I shrug and look away. Hillary reports that Josh sadly nodded before turning back around. Church proceeds and when it ends, the teens are beckoned downstairs while the adults stay upstairs. Once down, Hillary and I stand to one side while we get soda and cookies. Josh walks over, followed by Ben. Hillary walks away, to talk to Nathan, leaving me to chat with my suitors. 8 Josh, I think you are really sweet, but I havent known you that long. Ben, Ive known you for years but youve turned me down every time I asked, I explained. Does that mean you are turning both of us down? Ben asks. I shake my head no. What I am going to do is ask both of you a series of questions. And, now I like both of you, but I will chose the one who knows me better. I will ask the questions today and give you guys an answer on Wednesday, I explain. I hand both boys a piece of paper and a pen. There are six questions. Number one: What is my middle name? I ask and then pause. I read each question with enough time for both boys to write down an answer. They finish and hand the paper and pens back to me. Hillarys aunt comes down the stairs and calls to us. We go up and out to the car. We head towards my house, Hillary not knowing how I am going to decide who to see. Once home, I go upstairs to change and get ready for bed. Once ready, I pull out the remaining homework and work until 10p. I set my alarm and then crawl into bed. Before I know it, Im being awakened by my alarm. |
