Operating on the Amateur LEO (low earth orbit) satellites is easy and fun with small antennas and even just a dual band HT, two different radios, or a mobile dual bander like the FT-8100 that I am using now. Click on the AMSAT.org logo on the left for satellite information, links, and more. My first operating was accomplished using a homemade 440 5 element beam, and a 5/8 wave mobile vertical antenna. UO-14, AO-27, and SO-41 uplink on 2 meters and downlink on 440. I have made contacts across the U.S.A., Canada and Mexico with just the station you see in the picture. And, you have to

know where the satellites are of course. This is accomplished using tracking software available from various sources on the internet, and I use PocketSat software for my Palm III, and on the home station computer I use SatScape. Click on the PocketSat Logo to
go to their site for free download, and also on the SatScape screen shot to go to the site where this FREE software is available. SatScape even will update the Keplerian elements for you at the click of a button. The "kep" elements are the mathmatical elements that tell the program where the satellite is situated in orbit. These are updated a few times a week from NASA and various other tracking sources and are very easy to use. Even older DOS software works well. SatScape is my favorite, and you can't beat the price.
You can also track satellites live on the internet using the J-Track site. Click the Dish.
