I believe in teaching children, not subjects. Although my specialization is Mathematics, I believe my first priority is to teach children. To teach them to think for themselves and to apply what they learn in the classroom to the real world. To teach them to work collaboratively in a learning community and to teach them that they do have worth and that they can be successful when given a chance. I chose Math because I am intrigued by numbers and their relationships, and I chose to teach because I want to make a difference in the life of at least one child. Math was a subject that I found extremely difficult in school, and my greatest desire is to help students find a love for numbers and a desire for knowledge in general. I believe in teaching lessons that connect multiple subjects. I think it is entirely possible to teach Math, Science and History all in the same lesson. If all the teachers in a given school would work together, I think we would see a significant increase in student's academic success. I strive to make my classroom a safe place for my students, a place where they can ask questions without fear of ridicule and a place where they know that their thoughts, feelings and opinions matter. I will not enter my classroom as a dictator or a ruler, but rather as a guide who will assist each of my students in finding the path that will be the most beneficial to their physical, mental, social and emotional well-being. |
