Kokowa Dokoda: The Birth of Mewtwo
Kokowa Dokoda: The Birth of Mewtwo

The Story of Mewtwo's Origin

Myutsuu no Tanjou, known in English as The Birth of Mewtwo or as The Story of Mewtwo's Origin, first aired when Myutsuu no Gyakushuu was shown on Japanese television. For unknown reasons, Warner Brothers Entertainment, who handled the English release, chose not to show the short prologue in theaters, or to include the full ten minutes on the subsequent video and DVD titles. Roughly the first three minutes of the film, titled Mewtwo's Origin, are grafted onto the beginning of the English release Pokemon: The First Movie

The following script was transcribed from the English dub of The Story of Mewtwo's Origin: Uncut as it was released on the Mewtwo Returns DVD. Any errors or typos are the fault of the Webmistress.

*Fade in from black to a lush jungle. Sounds of pokemon are heard. A team of men and women with shadowed eyes make their way down a path*

Man (Doctor Fuji): August sixth. Today my colleagues will reach the site where an ancient civilization may have created a shrine to mew. The most powerful pokemon to have ever existed, now believed to be extinct. Giovanni is financing the expedition. When he learned of my work in the field of cloning, he agreed to fund my research. But only if I would try to create for him an advanced living replica of mew. I had to agree. For all he wants is to control the most powerful pokemon the world has ever known. I, of course want something more. Much more…

*Mew flits behind the researchers, just out of sight. They reach the ruins of an ancient temple. On the wall is a carving of mew.*

Researcher: Mew…

*Mew's shadow is cast across the wall*

All: Huh?

Man (Doctor Fuji): Our team is bringing back what we believe to be a mew fossil. I pray it is authentic. If so I may finally have the DNA I need to create a pokemon powerful enough to survive the cloning process…perhaps then I can unlock the secret of restoring life…itself..

*Mew peeps into the tent they are working in, and then flies away to the mountains*

*cut to lab scene. Computer screens flash by, screen goes dark*

Child’s Voice: Where am I? Who am I? What am I? (echo)

Researcher: It’s just like all the other clones, Doctor. He doesn’t gain consciousness.

Doctor Fuji: I just don’t understand it. Its other vital signs are strong. We’re measuring brain activity.

*We see the origin of the child’s voice. It is Mewtwo, a small, purple-and blue kitten-like animal curled in a ball, suspended inside of a liquid-filled tube, covered in wires and tubes*

Mewtwo: I sense others near me…what are those strange sounds they make?

*A flash of amber light forms next to Mewtwo, now floating in darkness. He opens his eyes and uncurls. The light takes the form of a little girl in a white sundress*

Little Girl (Amber): Those are words! They’re talking!

Mewtwo: *surprised gasp* Uhh? What are you?

Little Girl: *giggles* what do you mean? I’m a girl! A person!

Mewtwo: Person? Am I a person?

Little Girl: well, you look like a pokemon, but you talk! I didn’t know a pokemon could talk like a person!

Mewtwo: Pokemon? Person? What are those? Which one am I?

Little Girl : maybe it makes a difference to you whether you’re a pokemon or a person, but not to me. *giggles* If you’re in this place, I guess you must be the same as all of us are.

*Bulbasaur, Squirtle and Charmander appear*

Bulbasaur: Saur!

Charmander: Char!

Squirtle: Squirtle!

*Cut to laboratory*

Male Researcher: What’s that?

Female Researcher: I’m not sure. But Mewtwo and Ambertwo seem to be communicating with the other clones.

Male Researcher: But how?!

Female Researcher: they could be using telepathy…

*Camera closes in on Doctor Fuji, who is running his hand across a tank containing a blinding glow of light*

Doctor Fuji: So…

*Back in the darkness…Ambertwo, Mewtwo, Bulbasaurtwo, Squirtletwo and Charmandertwo spin in a circle, suspended in the air*

Ambertwo: Everybody here is a copy. That’s why there’s a two after all of our names.

Mewtwo:*whining* I don’t understand.

Ambertwo: They call me Ambertwo. But I’m still really Amber.

Squirtletwo: Squirtle!

Bulbasaurtwo: Bulbasaur!

Charmander:*sneezes fire* Char!

Ambertwo: *laughs at charmander*

*Close up of doctor Fuji*

Doctor Fuj: Please…Please let my theories be true. I must see my little s smile again…

*Flashback, a darkened basement. A woman stands at the top of the stairs*

Woman: Dear?

Doctor Fuji: I’ve reawakened her consciousness! Here, in this chamber! I just need to keep it viable long enough to complete the process!

Woman: *shouting* Why are you doing this?! You can’t bring Amber back.

Doctor Fuji: You’re wrong! Look! She lives within this light! Her energy is undeniable! If my cloning theories are correct, we’ll have Amber back with us one day soon.

*A note, lying on the table with a wedding ring and a housekey lying on it*

Woman’s Voice (reciting note): I loved our daughter as much as you did. But she’s gone. No one can bring her back. And I cant go on watching you try. I’m sorry. Goodbye.

*Camera moves to the picture above the note. A photograph of Amber with her mother and father*

*end flashback*

Doctor Fuji: I’ll do anything *heavy pause*to see you again.

*fade to black*

Doctor Fuji walking down a hallway with another scientist*

Doctor Fuji: So. How are they doing today?

Scientist: You should be very pleased, doctor. The pokemon clones are in stable condition and Mewtwo is getting stronger everyday. One of them is bound to survive. It looks like all our hard work is finally paying off.

Doctor Fuji: *Sighs* Yes, Giovanni will be very happy, I’m sure. He may soon have the most powerful pokemon in the world…But I’ll get something much more precious. Knowledge. Of how to recreate life….Then...I’ll use it to bring her… back.

*In Amber’s dream world, blackness fades away. It is a sunny day, Amber, Mewtwo and the pokemon clones float in mid-air above a town. The black and white world becomes colour.*

Ambertwo: I call this my “Remember Place”! This is were I used to live!

Mewtwo: *covering his eyes* What is that?

Ambertwo: That’s the sun!

Mewtwo: What is it for?

Ambertwo: It makes the whole world bright and it keeps us warm all day.

Mewtwo: ohh… *Mewtwo is caught by a gust of wind* Uhh?

Ambertwo: *holding her hair out of her eyes* That’s called wind.

Mewtwo: Wind?

Ambertwo: *flying, leading the others on. Sun starts to set.* The wind helps us along! Sometimes it’s soft, and sometimes it’s very strong.

Ambertwo: And that’s the sunset. That’s when the sun says “Goodnight! See you tomorrow!”

Mewtwo: Is that a sun?

Ambertwo: *laughing* No! that’s the moon. And the stars are the little lights that twinkle all night, just so we wont feel alone in the dark.

Charmandertwo: Char…

*Charmander’s body begins to give off light. The others all turn and stare. Charmander becomes transparent, and starts to disintegrate into tiny points of light.*

Woman Researcher: We’re losing all readings from Charmandertwo.

Male Researcher: Oh no! Not again!

*In Amber’s dream world, Charmander, with an frightened expression on its face, disappears entirely*

Squirtletwo: Squirtle…

Bulbasaurtwo: Bulba!

*Both begin to fade as well, disappearing quickly*

Woman Researcher: Bulbasaurtwo and Squirtletwo are fading the same way!

Second Male Researcher: It looks like another failure.

*Mewtwo dives past Amber, and begins spinning about looking for the other clones. In confusion he turns back to Amber*

Mewtwo: Where did they go?

*Mewtwo’s expression changes to horror as Amber smiles sadly and points of light begin to drift from her as well*

*In the lab, Doctor Fuji stares dully at the fading light within the tube where Amber is*

Female Scientist: Doctor, we’re…losing her, too.

Doctor Fuji: Amber…

*Meanwhile, Amber’s dreamworld is also beginning to fade*

Mewtwo: What’s wrong, Amber? What’s happening?

Ambertwo: It feels like it’s time to say goodbye.

Mewtwo: *startled* Goodbye?

Mewtwo: I feel…something… *wipes his eyes* huh? *Stares at his hands, which he has wiped his tears onto* What are these?

Ambertwo: *steadily growing fainter* They’re tears. You’re crying.

Mewtwo: crying?

Ambertwo: My daddy used to tell me a bedtime story, that when pokemon are sad, and they cry, their tears are filled with life.

Mewtwo: I’m so…sad. *Mewtwo blinks, and tears spill down his face*

Ambertwo: I have to go.

Mewtwo: Why?

Ambertwo: I don’t know. But it’s alright. Thank you for caring about me…And don’t cry, Mewtwo. You should be happy! You’re alive, and life is wonderful (echoes)

*Amber fades away, leaving only a glitter of light by the moon*

Mewtwo: *despairingly* Ohh…

*The city below begins to fade as well, Mewtwo’s face contorts*

Mewtwo: *Whispering, growing slowly more agitated* These tears…What good are they?!

Mewtwo: *shouting* Please Amber! Come back! *In the lab, we see Mewtwo’s actual body, curled in a ball within a test tube. An aura of energy surrounds him, and he begins to emit a pulsing light.*

Mewtwo: *Shouting* Don’t go! Please! Amber?!

Female Scientist: Doctor! Mewtwo’s brainwaves are out of control!

Doctor Fuji: It’s getting too upset! It musn't remember this! Administer the serum! Do it immediately!

Female Scientist: I’ll try one hundred units. *types at her keyboard* ten… twenty… thirty… forty… fifty… sixty… seventy… eighty… ninety… one hundred!

Doctor Fuji: What’s happening?! Is it working?!

*Mewtwo’s body, which has been glowing with a psychic aura starts to fade back to normal*

Female Scientist: its brainwaves are going back to normal. Everything seems OK, Doctor.

Doctor Fuji: Nothing is OK! My Amber is gone forever!
*darkly* Only Mewtwo survives…

*Blackness, Mewtwo’s empty dreamworld. We see the chalk white shape of Mewtwo appear, curled into a ball, the camera closes in slowly*

Mewtwo: (echo) I have slept for so long…It seems like… forever… but I remember… something… someone

*Mewtwo’s voice begins to change. The image of a child Mewtwo slowly turns to that of an adolescent, and finally an adult*

Mewtwo: Life is wonderful… but…*with mature voice* why…?

Here, “Mewtwo and Amber” segues into the movie as most viewers are familiar with. Mewtwo's final line in The Birth of Mewtwo are his first in Mewtwo Strikes Back. If you would like to use this script for your own records or website, please let us know before doing so. Thanks!
