Kokowa Dokoda: Dengeki Pikachuu
Manga: Denegki Pikachuu and Ono Toshihiro

Kasumi Manga Artist Ono Toshihiro was born in 1965 and is best known for his somewhat controversial adaptation of the first two Pokemon story arcs. The manga series ran in Coro Coro Comics Magazine as Dengeki Pikachuu for roughly three years and was collected into four tankobon volumes.

In 1999, Viz Media published the manga in English as four mini-series, each consisting of four issues. These mini-series were collected into squarebound graphic novels titled Pokemon!, and differentiated by a subtitle, as was Viz's policy at the time. The series is best known in English as The Electric Tale of Pikachu, though this title appears only on the first volume.

Dengeki Pikachuu was cleverly written and stylishly drawn, but that was where the trouble came in. Ono's depictions of his female characters, major and minor, were simply too racy for the under-twelve audience the comic was ostensibly aimed at. About a year into Dengeki's run, Ono tried to tone down the sexual undercurrent by redesigning female lead Kasumi with lighter hair, softer features and a younger look (and, to some extent, a kinder personality). The series was cancelled in 1999.

pikachuu In the case of Viz's release, the initial mini-series comics ("floppies") were flipped (the practice of reversing artwork and page layouts in order to make manga read right-to-left) but not edited. Later print runs would have substantial artwork editing done to cover up plunging necklines, reduce bust sizes, and sometimes entirely re-costume scantily clad characters. In at least one case, full pages were removed from stories.
