Manga: Pokemon Special and Mato, Hidenori Kusaka and Satoshi Yamamoto

Red and Yellow Pokemon Special is an ongoing manga serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday. It consists of several arcs, each loosely based around the various pokemon game generations. Author Hidenori Kusaka has been writing the stories since 1997. Original Artist MATO illustrated the first nine volumes, but was forced to retire due to illness in 2001. Satoshi Yamamoto took up her mantle and has drawn nearly twenty volumes since.

Viz media published individual sqaure-bound albums of roughly forty pages, which were later collected into volumes one through seven. They covered the first two story arcs under the title Pokemon Adventures. Singaporean publishers Chuang Yi, who have partnered with Viz on several projects, have published the entire series in English, though these volumes can only be purchased online and often have high shipping costs.

Red...or was that green? Pokemon Special is deceptively cute-looking, but has the hardest-hitting original storyline of all the manga adaptations. Special's stories are based around the gameboy games and have little connection with any events portrayed in anime or films. In Viz's adaptation some character names were shuffled, which has led to confusion ever since. In the original, the three main characters were hero Green, his rival, Red, and the wild card, Blue. Viz switched names to better correspond with available English-language game cartridges and offered hero Red, his rival, Blue, and the wild card, Green. Chuang Yi has maintained these changes in their translated editions.
