Nebraska Trout Unlimited Chapter 710 Press Release:
Steve Westphal, President

We are honored to participate with Laura Krebsbach and the Sierra Club on this fine event today.

As you may know, the TeVelde dairy expansion in Antelope County was permanently enjoined on their third attempt to obtain a permit of operation by the Nebraska Court of Appeals last Tuesday.

Nebraska Trout Unlimited Chapter # 710 is proud to have provided the funds for that appeal.

With that problem taken care of, our concern now mirrors that of the Sierra Club.

At the TeVelde dairy site, we have a 1.3 acre waste lagoon containing several million gallons of cattle manure sitting precariously over the headwaters of the East Branch of the Verdigre Creek, Eastern Nebraska's only naturally reproducing trout stream.

We have been informed by the Environmental Protection Agency in Kansas City that the legal responsibility of
removing the affluent and closure of the lagoon lies with the TeVeldes, under the supervision of the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality.

Trout Unlimited Chapter 710 continues it's commitment to water quality in the Verdigre watershed to insure that the NDEQ fulfills it's obligation to oversee the cleanup of the lagoon and remove it's potential to pollute the east branch of the creek and the Grove Trout Rearing Station, which provides 40% of all the trout stocked in the waters of our state.

Our chapter will work with Laura Krebsbach and the Sierra Club to identify these abandoned lagoon's owners and hold them liable for closure.

We look forward to joining with the Sierra Club's efforts to keep the pressure on the responsible parties to remove these abandoned time-bombs and therefore protect Nebraska's legacy of clean water.
