SONY SELLS ALOT OF PSPS IN UK

Sony's PSP system had a record launch in the UK, selling 185,000 units in one week according to analysts, Chart-Track. That is more than any gaming console has ever sold in its opening week in the UK.

Before the PSP came along and destroyed it, the record was held by Nintendo with its DS portable system. It sold 87,000 units in its first week.

Since the September 1 launch of the PSP in the UK, Sony has raked in about $60 million just from its hardware sales. Not a bad week for the electronics giant. DVD-Recordable.org reports:

The success of the UK launch helps bolster confidence in Sony's ability to produced and market the PSP, a system that has consistently been outsold by the Nintendo DS in the Japanese market.

According to the analyst company Media Create, Nintendo DS sales in Japan during the final week of July exceeded the sales of the PSP and the Playstation 2 combined. So while the PSP has enjoyed a solid launch in the UK, early August data suggests that the PSP annual sales in Japan fall behind that of the DS by nearly 130,000 units, year-to-date.

Ian Fogg of JupiterResearch makes a good point: "These are very early days. Sony's success must be judged on PSP sales over the entire Christmas run up, as well as how the vital games sold per console ratios develop."

In my opinion, if the GameCube is any indicator, Nintendo won't live up to the amount of good games that Sony will, at least for the mature market.

GAme Review:
MIDNIGHT CLUB 3 DUB EDITION
   We wouldn't like to be part of a midnight club. Once we get home from work all we want to do is have our dinner and put our feet up. Even if we were unemployed the idea still wouldn't take our fancy - we'd spend all day doing a combination of looking for work, hunting for loose change and watching Trisha.

Similar to Activision's Tony Hawk's Underground 2: Remix, this hasn't been built from the ground up for the PSP. It's essentially the PlayStation 2 version crammed into a UMD, and as you would imagine, a few things have been left on the cutting room floor. Vehicle damage is the most noticeable omission, followed closely by the motion blur effects. The frame rate is a bit erratic at times too, although never to a serious degree.

If developers are going to convert console games to the PSP then they need to be aware that the PSP's screen, no matter how lovely it is, isn't ideal for games as 'busy' as this. The speedometers and whatnot obscure a fair chunk of the action, and the numerous infinitesimal details on the vehicles have been lost in translation. The tiny stickers that you can plaster on your doors are a fine example - they're so small that you can't make out one manufacturer's logo from another. The loading times are also a hindrance as far as portable gaming goes. We don't mind waiting a minute or so in the comfort of home, but having to wait on the move is another matter.

Quibbles aside, what Rockstar have achieved with their first PSP title is impressive. The open-plan city is huge and packed with detail, the cars (and motorbikes) look the part and it moves at a fair old lick. Vehicle customisation is surprisingly deep, with far more parts unlocked from the start than Need for Speed Underground, and there's a diverse assortment of music tracks present. With artists including Ash, Marilyn Manson, Queens of the Stone Age, 50 Cent, Kasabian and Iggy Pop, you're bound to find something that'll make you want to turn the volume up a couple of notches.

The career mode is structurally more than adequate. You start off with enough cash to buy and 'trick out' a reasonably decent motor, then have to ride around the city finding other boy (and girl) racers to take on. Quick race throws you straight into the proceedings - you don't even get to choose a vehicle - while arcade is the most nonsensical of the lot. In this mode certain races feature power-ups, such as invisibility.

In addition to the aforementioned motorbikes, there are a few other things that make MC3 stand out from its competitors. Each vehicle has a special move - the cars, for instance, can ride on two wheels - and if you catch the attention of the police then they'll try to force you off the tarmac. It's always quite easy to shake them off though - there are no tracks as such so you're free to scour the city for shortcuts.

It'll take copious battery-recharges to see and do everything, but the home version can be picked up for about fifteen quid less and won't strain your eyes as much. A purchasing decision depends on whether you can put up with the loading times, really - waiting twelve seconds for a vehicle to load up in our garage is about ten seconds too long in our book.

                                          Juiced for PSP
THQ today announced the critically-acclaimed street racer Juiced will make its handheld debut with Juiced: Eliminator for the PSP in Summer 2006.

Juiced: Eliminator will deliver a unique
game-play experience, taking advantage of the PSP's functionality to offer never-before-seen multiplayer games and expand on the crew and pink-slip racing that helped established Juiced as a leader in the street-racing genre.
The game will feature new crews, cars and Eliminator Mode, where the slowest driver in each lap is removed from competition until one remains.

"From the moment the rubber hit the concrete, Juiced has experienced tremendous global success, racing to the top of sales charts worldwide and providing a strong foundation for what will become a successful franchise,"
said Kelly Flock, executive vice president, worldwide publishing, THQ. "With Juiced: Eliminator and the portability of the PSP, those sitting on the metro, on a train or at their desk, can pursue innovative new game-play modes, pink-slip and crew racing, delivering a red-line adrenaline rush strong enough
to replace the morning coffee."

"From the beginning, our goal with Juiced: Eliminator was to design the game from the ground up, creating the next evolution in the Juiced racing experience," said Colin Bell, Managing Director, Juice Games. "While the game will be immediately recognizable to all Juiced fans, we're very excited to bring a new dimension to the brand by tailoring to the inherent capabilities of the PSP."

Juiced: Eliminator will capture the look and feel of Juiced while building on its success with the addition of new cars, tracks, characters and game modes. The built-in wireless connectivity on the PSP lends itself to expanding the multi-player options, including multiplayer crew races, pink slip racing and the all new 'Eliminator' mode where the slowest driver per lap is removed from the competition, and the winner is the last one left in the race. Key features include:

* All new 'ad-hoc' multiplayer games
* 8 new characters and crews
* 2 new locations each with 8 unique tracks
* 9 new cars with over 100 new body-kit components
* New single player game modes
* Re-styled menus
* Improved career mode progression
* All-new full-screen post-race movies

Sony sets holiday PSP lineup

Six first-party games get specific release date; all now planned to be on shelves before December.

With only a pair of first-party games released for the PSP since Sony launched its handheld in March (MLB in April and Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee in May), many gamers have been understandably frustrated by the system's spotty software support. Sony looks to address those concerns, starting with today's announcement of specific release dates for six Sony-published titles all due on shelves by mid-November.
Also grand theft Auto liberty City Stories OCT .25.
