Ski Jump Nose or Saddle Nose

Do you suffer from this condition and wish there was something you could do to correct it?

CosMedica, NYC nose surgery clinic, is the place to go for all of your plastic surgery needs. Dr. Bellin, the clinics rhinoplasty specialist, will evaluate your individual situation and together you will determine the best solution to meet your goals.

The Cause

Ski Jump nose, or Saddle nose as it is sometimes called, is usually caused by genetics. This condition is even more common for people who are of Oriental or African-American heritage. It is caused by an insufficient amount of tissue in the top of the nose. As a result, the middle of the nose has a dip or groove.

The Treatment

The majority of the time it is treated by removing cartilage from inside the nose and building up the middle portion until it has a straighter, more level appearance. In some cases, a doctor may use bone grafts from your rib or hip to create the desired effect. Other times, a silicone implant may be inserted instead.

Whichever method is used, the desired result is a more level top to the nose that blends well with the rest of your features.

Recovery

This type of nose surgery is not unlike any other in that you must follow proper post-surgery guidelines to obtain the optimum results and minimal healing period.

1  Generally, patients are released from the clinic the same day.
2  You will probably have some kind of surgical tape over the effected area.
3  Any stitches you receive will dissolve on their own.
4  Nasal packing may have been used. Usually the packing is removed within the
    following day or two.
5  If given a splint, it will likely be removed within the first week.

Your first night at home you may suffer from some side-effects of the surgery.
1  Headache.
2  Aching nose.
3  Some bleeding.

These are all common symptoms and are no cause for alarm. The discomfort will be moderate to severe depending on the type of surgery you under went. If your nasal bones were involved, rather than the cartilage, you will likely experience more pain for the first couple of days. You will be given a prescription for medication to help you with this period in the healing process.

It is also wise to keep your head elevated the first day and plan on mostly bed rest. Ice to the effected area for the first couple of days may ease the swelling as well. Your swelling should begin to subside within two weeks after the surgery, but may still take anywhere from three to six months to completely go away.

Some patients, post-surgery, experience some numbness in the facial area surrounding the surgery site. This should subside within a month or two. As with any other symptom that may disturb you, if you feel you are not healing they way you should, or the way the doctor said you would, do not hesitate to contact the clinic and make an appointment.

If you work at a job that does not require physical exertion, you will likely be able to return to your normal duties after the first week or so. For any job or other activity that is physically demanding, you will likely need to wait two or three weeks before resuming normal activity.

At CosMedica, a NYC nasal surgery clinic, Dr. Bellin and his staff work closely with their patients from the initial consultation through the healing process to provide the best service available in the field of cosmetic surgery. Contact them today.
