The pulp of a person's tooth contains nerves and tissues that can become inflamed or infected due to disease or injury. In most cases these nerves and tissues are incapable of repairing themselves. If they die, an endodontic treatment, also known as a root canal, is needed. An endodontist is a dentist that has specialized training in the field of endodontics. This usually requires another two to three years of schooling beyond general dental school. Many endodontic residents perform original research in order to obtain a Master's degree and a specialty certificate in the field of Endodontics. They focus their careers on specializing in treating difficult endodontic cases. Most of their cases are referred to them by general dentists. Some of these may include: Teeth with blocked canals Teeth with narrow canals Patients with unusual or problematic tooth anatomy Drainage incisions Internal tooth bleaching Abscesses Root fractures Endodontics involves the use of advanced technology such as operating microscopes, digital imaging and ultrasound equipment to perform specialty services that most general dental practitioners are not capable or equipped to perform.
