Kingsbury Cubs 2002 Coach’s Game Day Notes

5/18/02 – Cub’s vs. Kingsford Hts. Tigers;  The Cubbies took the field first and showed some good defense, with a 3 up – 3 down top of the first.  Then proceeded to score 8 on 9 hitters in the bottom of the first.  10 out of 13 batted 1.000 in the first game as the Cubbies fired up the offense and scored 30 in 5 at bats. Offensive standouts were Mark Nelson with 2 homers and 7 RBI’s,  Charlie Creighton with 2 homers and 5 RBI’s.  Jimmy Pedretti earned game ball honors with a single, double and a homer for 5 RBI’s to go wth 3 innings of standout defensive work at the pitcher position that included a double play!!  Austen Hanna hit for power from the lead off position with 2 doubles and 2 triples to go 4 for 4 on the day!! Check out all the stats here!!

5/29/02 – Cub’s vs. Kingsbury Cobras; We sent 9 batters to the plate in 3 of our 5 at bats and had 9 guys hit 1.000.  This game was most notable for the confusion on the coaches part!  As it was my birthday, I was hoping for smooth sailing, but it was not to be.  The game flew buy and when I ordinarily would be warming up the team…I was fixing the field.  And when I usually put in some younger guy’s in the infield, I didn’t find out what the score was until the top of the 6th!!  As we got up to bat the first inning I realized that I hadn’t even gotten the helmets out of the van!!  Despite the confusion we had some standout performances from our players.  Charlie went 3/3 with 4 RBI’s, Ryan Garwood continuing batting 1.000 with 3 singles and 3 RBI’s  and Paul Gary coupled a good defensive effort with his first home run and 3 RBI’s to earn game ball honors!! Check out all the stats here!!

6/1/02 – Cub’s vs. Springfield Cubs; 21 runs on 37 at bats!!  Not bad!!  The Cubbies continue to roll as we have 7 guys bat 1.000 and get 28 hits out of 37 trips to the plate!!  It looked like the team’s been eating their Wheaties as the slugging %age was outta the park!! 13 of our 28 hits went for extra bases!!  We had as many homers as we did doubles!!  10 out of 13 guy’s had RBI’s.  Leading the way was Alex W and Charlie with 4 a piece and Zak W. and Paul G. with 3 each.  Playing 3rd and 1st along with a +3.0 slugging % off of both the tee and the pitch Charlie C. earned game ball!!  Check out all the stats here!!

6/8/02 – Cub’s vs. Westville Cougars; Defense is in!!  We had 3 inings with only 3 batters and a total of 21 batters in 6 innings!!  Our infield must have looked like the great wall of China to those guys!!  Spectacular throws from Charlie C, awesome stops from Alex at pitcher, unpenetrable play from Zak W at SS and Paul and Jimmy at 2nd….man we looked AWESOME!!  We had our WORST hitting day of the year but with a defense like that WHO NOTICES!!??  Jimmy P lead the charge with 5 RBI’s.  Alex W and Jimmy P both hit round trippers.  But the game goes to Mark Nelson for outstanding offense (3/3 w/ 2 RBI’s) and some spectacular plays at 1st base!!  Check out all the stats here!!

6/12/02 – Cub’s vs. Kingsbury Sox;  OK… I know it say’s Cub’s vs. Sox…but believe me that wasn’t the Cub’s out there tonight!  We had our absolute worst night of fielding EVER.  Now it happened to occur on the night we were playing the best team in the league!?  But we came out great as we were batting first, sending 9 batters to the plate and scoring 8 runs!!  But when we took the field, it was obvious something was wrong!  We played “pretty” well the first inning only allowing 3 runs on 7 batters…but then we allowed 9 batters each of the next 4 innings!!  We couldn’t buy an out!!  We had more errors then my typing!! HAHA  But we are here to learn and we are hoping a couple of key ideas will be picked up from this game.  A.) Failure isn’t falling down.  Failure is not getting up!  AND  B.) We are a darn good team!!  For those of you not fortunate enough to witness it yourself, consider this….we absolutely STUNK on defense (7 total outs over the last 4 innings!!)  YET!!!! …….We only lost by 4 runs!!  We can beat anybody…if we just keep trying!!  On a rather somber night, game ball goes to Aaron Schoof.  Aaron went 0 for 3 with no RBI’s, no big plays of any kind other then continuing to play as hard as he could with a smile on his face through the entire game!!  THAT is all we can ask for, giving your best and having fun regardless of the score!!   Check out all the stats here!!
