Hong Kong light rail vehicles are electrically powered, single cars operated by a 750-volt overhead system.

Each vehicle is self-contained with a driving cab atone end. The system requires that the vehicles travel in one direction only, with passengers boarding and leaving through three double sliding doors on the left side of the vehicle. An auxiliary driving position is provided at the rear or emergency and shunting purposes.

The vehicle structure is made of stainless steel with extensive use of glass-reinforced fibre to form the front and rear canopies and driver's cab.

The fully air-conditioned vehicles are designed to provide passenger convenience and comfort and to suit the busy operating environment in Hong Kong. The rigid-frame, single-decked vehicles. which are 20 metres long and 2.65 metres wide, incorporate proven technology.

Each vehicle has a carrying capacity of more than 200 passengers. It can be operated either singly or in pairs to cope with passenger demand at different hours. With the latest electronic power control system and regenerative braking, the vehicles are very energy efficient with up to 40% of the traction current recycled within the system.
