KCOM in Crisis: Another Appeal to the Board of Trustees Without Progress
GROWING ISSUES ARE REPEATEDLY PRESENTED TO THE BOARD WITHOUT ANY PROGRESS(con't.)
Due to the turmoil on campus, a specially called board of trustees meeting to hear reports from all parties concerned was held in June 2000. Representing the clinical faculty, Drs. Jack Bragg, Kent Blanke, and Mike Willman, Sr. offered a detailed and complete presentation of clinical faculty issues that included 60 pages of extensive supportive documentation. The SGA president, Travis Fawver, and other students were invited to present student complaints. Present at this special meeting to offer advice to the board were consultants from off-campus who included an osteopathic medical school dean and a former osteopathic college president and dean.
For the third time, clinical faculty representatives detailed the complete inability of the current administration to effectively lead the college. The student representatives presented student concerns that were highly critical of the administration. Again, the trustees hesitated and failed to act decisively. Shortly after this meeting, they released a brief memo to the faculty endorsing the president. However, they were finally forced to accept that Dr. McGovern’s choice of dean was a poor choice. Shortly afterwards, Dr. Mike Kuchera was moved to a lateral position at the college (Vice President of International Osteopathic Education and Associate Dean for Osteopathic Research) and Dr. Dixie Rawlins was appointed as interim dean. In an unfortunate turn of events the KCOM Dean of Students, Ron Gaber, reprimanded the SGA representative, Travis Fawver, within days of his presentation to the board. The threat of behavioral probation for the student was hastily withdrawn after a chorus of disapproval from faculty and students. Many viewed this action as another example of how reprisals are used by the administration to intimidate and silence individuals critical of administration practices.
