June 2000 Clinical Faculty Presentation to the KCOM Board of Trustees
Disappointment with Dr. McGovern’s Management of these Critical Issues

‘Dr. McGovern was appointed to his position largely unknown by the clinical faculty and without significant participation of the general faculty.  The tone of his administration has exhibited a direction of the school moving away from our fundamental purpose of training osteopathic medical students.  The visible focus of K.C.O.M. is now on senior retirement centers, Kirksville downtown improvement projects, theatre projects in Kirksville, and other items.  Historically, K.C.O.M. has always been a leader in the Kirksville community, but this level of intimate involvement is unprecedented.  It seems apparent that rotation site development, library building programs, faculty recruitment, and curricular development to benefit our students are not currently at the forefront of the colleges’ primary objectives.  Furthermore, the interjection of Dr. McGovern’s immediate family into the workings of committees vital to student education and curricular development is counterproductive.’

-The president has not made a positive impression on faculty at clinical rotation sites who had the opportunity to work with him
e.g.: Please refer to the letter from T. Wilson, D.O.
e.g.: The dean of the Arizona medical school told our regional representative that this president has no respect for D.O.’s

-The president made a negative impression on potential fundraising sources
e.g.: Oral communication by Cindy Byler, D.O., St. Louis, MO.

-The overall vision of this administration to lead K.C.O.M. in a direction suited for the best interest of a quality student medical education is in serious question.
e.g.: The curriculum committee is organized to give clinical faculty a diminutive role.
e.g.: The interjection of Dr. McGovern’s family into administrative positions causes open discussion and decision making difficult and awkward. (Curriculum committee example)

-Alumni support of the college and administration is being affected.
e.g.: The alumni/development division, which is instrumental for K.C.O.M. fundraising, has undergone major changeovers with loss of experienced personnel.
e.g.: Multiple letters written by recent graduates to the administration and the board. (one example is to refer to the letter from Dr. D. Power)
