KCMTS, by arrangement with Joseph Weinberger, proudly presents: Into The Woods by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine.
Once upon a time, an audience dreamt of a theatrical experience that
would enchant, amaze and yet be thought provoking. Suddenly, KCMTS
appeared and invited them to come INTO THE WOODS and be enchanted by
the spell of this extraordinary, enchanting fairy-tale of a musical.
KCMTS dazzling revival of Sondheims 1987 production is a deft
reworking of classic fairy-tales, which exquisitely interweaves the
stories of Cinderella, Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk and Little Red
Riding Hood with the story of a Baker and his Wife wishing for a
child.
But this is no pantomime.
This stylish production skilfully exposes the dark outcome of these
stories beyond the happy ever after. It is a journey from sumptuous
frivolity into chaos and despair as familiar characters begin to act
in unfamiliar ways. The production is richly redolent of Grimms fairy
tales since all actions have their consequences.
As with Sondheims other masterpiece COMPANY, aching cello lines and
translucent woodwind punctuate the action with aural ecstasy. The
score includes some of Sondheims most hauntingly beautiful songs:
"Children Will Listen," the telling lyrics of "Giants In The Sky," and
the piece culminates in his most heartfelt music in the beautiful
quartet "No One Is Alone."
KCMTS charming production and witty design, which takes us from the
grotesque to the glamorous in high style, reminds us that musicals,
like fairy-tales, can appeal to everyone.
INTO THE WOODS is directed by Cara Rodway. Performed by Matt
Robertson, Amy Payne, Ronald Crocker, Gaby Staniszewska, Cathryn
