Background:
Damascus' family is like the modern-day Kennedy family. Damascus himself has had a very low profile, thanks largely due to his military service, and so most people would not recognize him.

William Damascus. Last of a line of entertainers, artisans, community leaders, inventors. Thinkers. Idealists. Champions. Advocates. But never soldiers. And so Damascus is the reluctant soldier, raised into an galaxy that had need of soldiers and no need of revolutionary thinkers; the status quo is their ally, and while Damascus might wish to challenge it, his upbringing dictated otherwise.

The finest education, the social elite, and a future in politics or business were all open to the only child of the venerable Damascus family on Earth. While no longer large enough to be considered a major noble house, the Damascus line is documented well back through the years, an ancient lineage of which the entire family has always been proud. Of good, solid stock and honest character, the Damascus line has seen famous writers, actors, advocates, politicians, and inventors all raised in its house. Only military officers are noticably vacant from the family tree, a fact always written off to the pacifistic nature of the family itself, even amidst the intruige in the Senate of old, and the Federation that has taken its place.

William Damascus is the last living male of that line, raised by his mother and never having known his father, who vanished shortly after he was born, thought to have been adbucted and killed by pirates -- the official word from the Federation was that it was rebel insurgency. Nevertheless, there were very few doors closed to him as a child, and so it was that he was educated and even attended university, where he studied political science, acting, and literature. Much to the surprise of his mother and nearly everyone who knew him, Damascus applied for a commission in the Federation Marines, joining a scholarship program offered by the Marine Aviation Division. He attended officer school for two years, learning basic military conduct and ability, and was groomed to be a Marine Flight Officer.

Damascus' motives were rather simple, and not at all what the Aviation Division would have liked, had they known him a bit better. He was brave, young, and brash, determined to make a name for himself as his ancestors had done, and  though he did not relish a lust for combat he had no problem perfoming his duties as a Marine officer both on the ground and in the air.   And so he was drawn into the Federation Marine Corp where he thought he could see the galaxy, meet all manner of races, become friend to all and master the knowledge of the universe. His training in political science, cultures, and the theater all appealed to his superiors in the academy, and, due to his dilligent study and good grades, several recruiters had him pegged for everything from an intelligence officer to a fast tracked CAG.

And so it was that Damascus entered Starfleet as a Marine Assault Hopper Pilot, responsible for providing covert insertions for Marine squads to assisting with Starfleet fighter duty to going into the brush the with assualt Marines to provide transportation when needed. It did not take very long for him to rapidly discover the Marine's harsh, merciless means of deailng with those outside its idealogy.  After a few years of Marine squadron hopping, Damascus found himself attached to the USS Merlin which itself was attached to the Obsidian Fleet near the Loki system.  And thus a new chapter began in his life...
Character Appearance:
In a different age, Damascus' appearance might have been called noble. It is not imposing, nor even particularly commanding, but it is striking -- one of those faces that is difficult to forget. Not even is he unusually handsome, posessing of a rather boyish demeanor prone to smile quickly and often. He is tall, but not unnaturally so, just over six feet and built moderately, in proportion. His hair is very short, perhaps an inch or so longer in the front than anywhere else, and skirting the edge of dirty blond. His features could be described as 'chiseled,' very prominent, but more graceful and lithe than the word allows. His eyes are deeply set, as if peering out from well inside his head, visible as they are only due to their light gray color, unusual in and of itself, with a hint of yellow, almost feline outline to them. His voice is devoid of any accent, making it difficult to place his origins. His demeanor is as casual as it is observant -- even when he is not serious, he often betrays a hint of soberiety.
