Hong Kong Island

On Saturday, Mrs. Speirs and I took the ferry to Hong Kong Island.  As you can see, downtown Hong Kong has many skyscrapers.  Although many are just square-shaped, others have very different shapes.  At night, they are all lit up in different colors.  The scene is stunningly beautiful.

Other areas of the island are made up of beautiful beaches abutting lush mountainsides.  Everywhere I see bamboo, eucalyptus, banana and palm trees.  The volcanic soil and the heat and humidity create ideal conditions for the surrounding jungles.

There are also areas filled with market stalls on the island.  Here at Stanley Market there are many outside markets as well as regular shops specializing in clothes made of silk and traditional Chinese items for tourists.  My friend and I spent many hours here getting some good bargains.  I bought a ferocious looking dragon to hang in the classroom.  My students will love it!  I also bought presents for my husband and son, but those are surprises.
