Mr. Faulkner is an
Australian. He, his wife, and young son moved to Hong Kong two
years ago when a teaching position became available at Yew Chung.
He teaches all of his classes in English: Reading, Language
Arts, Math, Social Studies, Science.
As you can see, the children like him very much and often
want his attention. |

Tests,
tests, tests! American children are not the only ones who
have to take tests. Mr. Faulkners Class, called P5,
took a series of Reading/Language Arts tests this week. The
children read a short version of Charlie and the Chocolate
Factory, and answered questions about it. Then they had
to choose the correct adjective, pronoun, or verb to fit in
sentences. Finally, they had to write a two-page story about
a very unusual holiday. All of this work was done in
English! Later they had a test from their Chinese teacher,
this time they had to read and write in Cantonese. No wonder
they were tired at the end of the day!

I
showed the P5 children a slide show of America. Some of them
recognized our famous landmarks, such at the Statue of Liberty,
the White House, and the Grand Canyon. After the show, Mr.
Faulkner asked them questions about the U.S. When they got a
right answer, they received one of the pencils I brought from
America. (Yes, everyone got one by the end.) They
seemed very pleased with the pencils, as you can see in the photo. |

The video of my fourth graders talking about their
cultural items and giving a tour of our classroom was a big hit!
They enjoyed seeing them and especially hearing their New York
accents.
