World Community Grid
Most everyone I know is passionate about finding a cure for AIDS and HIV but have no idea how they can help, other than giving money. World Community Grid changes this. You can donate your idle computer time to the cause.
You sign up and then download a reasonably sized program from the site. Then your computer pretty much does the rest of the work. If you are on dialup you have to make sure your results are sent, but if you are on cable or DSL you never have to do much of anything. It's free and easy to install this software.
It's run by IBM and The Scripps Research Institute. You can join groups and have mini point competitions. You don't get anything from making points, but you do have the peace of mind knowing that you are helping out a worth cause.
I've been a member for two weeks and I think its worth it. It hasn't slowed up my computer significantly.
