Homework

Homework will be given Monday through Thursday nights. The purpose of homework is for extra practice on new concepts learned in math and language arts. At times, your child may be working on a project for class over an extended period of time.

Homework is a great opportunity to help your child, but only as needed. If they struggle with a task, PLEASE LET ME KNOW with a note in their assignment pad so I can help your child with the concept in class. To ensure success and demonstrate the importance of homework to your child, it may help to provide them a special place and a set time to complete their assignments. This helps keep expectations at home consistent with school.

I expect each child to have an adult in their home sign their assignment pad indicating that the homework was completed. If the homework was not completed and the adult does not want to sign, please just write a quick note explaining the situation. The assignment pad is our best way to keep the communication lines open between home and school. If I have a question for you, I will either write in the pad or attach a note. I hope you do the same.

Every night students are expected to read twenty minutes for their reading homework: Monday through Thursday. In addition they will complete a short written task to demonstrate their understanding. I hope you promote reading over the weekend to provide consistency. I will send a note about the reading assignment the first week of school. This reading helps prepare students for the 100 minutes of reading on the End of Grade Test!

Homework for science and social studies will not be given on a daily basis. The assignments will mostly consist of projects, reading, researching, papers, and studying. Social Studies will be integrated throughout the year in reading and science involves many hands-on, inquiry based lessons (more on this at Curriculum Night).

Throughout the year, some assignments are graded while others are reviewed and checked for completion. For graded work, I make sure to provide a letter as well as a number. For some assignments or projects, I use a rubric similar to writing. I will provide more information about my writing program during Curriculum Night. The grading scale I use in my classroom is as follows:

A -- 93-100 (Outstanding - above and beyond my expectations)

B -- 85-92 (Totally wonderful – hard work was done)

C -- 77-84 (Satisfactory – average work)

D -- 70-76 (Needs improvement – I know you can do better)

E -- below 70 (Not acceptable – see me for extra help) PLEASE CORRECT!!

Final grades combine number grades, participation, and a total reflection of the student’s work and effort.

Homework is a task many students generally dread; however, my homework usually takes 20 - 25 minutes beyond their reading assignment that reviews and practices our learning in the classroom. Homework is essential and very important in order for success.  If you have any questions or concerns please contact me or schedule a conference. Also, contact me if your child consistently is taking longer than 25 minutes on the practice assignments.

I believe every child has the ability to be very successful in my classroom. Attendance, hard work, and a good attitude toward school work are essential!  I am looking forward to fantastic year with your child!
