Steve staggered backward under the force of his amorous attacker's welcome, and escaped injury only by bracing his rear against the edge of the lobby sofa. Pete, trying to be helpful, said, "I think that's enough, Brenda. Let him breathe."

Brenda finally pulled her face away, leaving Steve with a paler version of her lipstick on his mouth.

"Gods don't need to breathe," she said dreamily, her greenish gold eyes liquid with passion. "And Steve is nothing if not a god."

"Then gods obviously snore and leave the wash undone for days," Pete pouted. "Forget heaven, I'll settle for hell. Falwell says I'm going there anyway."

And what was I doing during this meaningful religious debate? Standing there, eyes tracing the tight sinews of Brenda's wrists as they tightened around Steve's shoulders. Her red-clawed hands ran across his back in greedy, stroking motions.

Steve pulled his head back and took a deep breath. "Brenda... what are you doing here?"

The shimmer in her eyes clouded a bit. She dropped her hands back to her sides and looked up at him, gold dangle earrings swinging as she cocked her head.

"Steve.... this is the first time I see you in weeks and that's all you can say? Once you would have asked me why we didn't get together more often."

"Babe, it's been busy. Working on the album. Doing the PAs.... which you set up for us, I might add. You've been great."

Her smile returned, but with a wistful touch. "Until recently you would have made time."

"KC," Pete said, "you want to go up and lie down in the room? I'm sure it's safe by now."

The question drew Brenda's attention to me for the first time. She was looking right at me, hard, when she posed a question to Steve.

"Who's this and why's she staying in your room?"
